Contra Life 2
By: | November 25th, 2009

If there’s one thing I love, its creative mod-videos. Well, buckle up for one of the most popular level mods of all time (Little Big Planet especially): Contra’s first level.

In my opinion, 3D mods for 2D games put a whole new spin on retro titles: the creator has to interpret everything that isn’t viewable on a 2D plane, as well as figure out a way to incorporate the parent game’s mechanics as seamlessly as possible. Obviously Contra is perfectly suited for a parent game like Half Life 2.  If you enjoyed the video, the author, m0rtanius, also has Half-LifeVania and Super Half-Life Bros. for your viewing pleasure. There has always been a divide for gamers when discussing developers and publishers. On the one hand, most gamers will be more than happy to explain how their favorite developers have helped broaden their love of gaming, from the moment they first jumped into the LucasArts world of Zombies At My Neighbours, right through until Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

However, dare to mention the part that the publisher had to play in such a great title, and you are bound to be bombarded with ramblings of how they stifled all creativity, or ruined the project entirely.

Activision and Electronic Arts bear the majority of verbal rock throwing from the gaming community. But ask yourself this: where would we be without them?

By: | November 24th, 2009

Aion

The popular MMO Aion has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons since day one. It all started with some lengthy queues for players who pre-ordered the game, before moving into the humorless phase that most MMO gamers are more than familiar with.

Just when you think the world’s population is starting to recover from yet another zombie pandemic, a different one breaks out and resets the population to a select few.  In Valve’s sequel, survival rests on four individuals whose main goals are to reach safety, and beat the crap out of anything that stands in their way.

With a bunch of new weapons, five new maps, and additional monsters, zombie season just got that much more interesting.  While this year’s zombie title has seen a lot of additional content, the main issue still stands: is Left 4 Dead 2 a vast enough improvement over last year’s title to warrant a full retail release?  You’ll have to read on to find out.
