Technology is a relentless beast, careening forward at breakneck speeds. Hell, when I first activated my iPhone, I immediately received a text message from Apple letting me know that there was a new model coming out later that afternoon.

Gamers know this all too well. Particularly when it comes to software, we find ourselves drenched by a constant deluge of new titles. Even an enthusiast, with nothing but time to play games, cannot play all of the latest and greatest that our favorite hobby has to offer.

Combine the overabundance of new releases with the eternal need to “keep up with the Joneses”, and you have a recipe for constant pressure to leave games unfinished. Players are constantly quitting games before reaching the end, simply to be able to say that they experienced the next big thing.

How has this trend influenced the course of game development? Follow me over the jump to explore how game resolutions continue to be one of the medium’s greatest failings and opportunities.

left4dead2_1

It seems like 360 Left 4 Dead heads were met with a bit of a letdown during the first week, and encountered a great deal of lag: some consumers have even reported that they passed on the game because of it. Well fear that invisible beast no more!

In a move that Valve calls a “massive server upgrade“, it seems like lag issues are down to a minimum. In the words of Valve: “now quit reading this; get out there and kill some zombies!” Read more… »

EA’s online PC store is seemingly in the holiday mood, and cutting 30% off a heap of titles. The sale is not available for everything, but you can still get some newer-ish games like Command and Conquer 3 for $20.96,  Dragon Age: Origins for $34.96 (!!) and Mass Effect for $13.96. The sale lasts until Monday, and if I were you, I’d be spending those Friday paychecks right away on Mass Effect and Dragon Age: after all, Bioware deserves it!

Check it out the full sale listing here, and to our American viewers: Happy Thanksgiving!

Gamer Limit Review: Zombie Shooter 2
By: | November 26th, 2009

I used to have a recurring dream; one where I would be alone, trapped in my old school. Outside, there would be hundreds of zombies eating some people I knew and trying to break in; it used to terrify me. I always woke up just as they would break through the door. The dream would always leave me with cold sweats and never able to get back to sleep. The thought of being outnumbered, alone, and struggling to survive has always terrified me.

Zombie Shooter 2 takes the classic “town infested by the undead” scenario and places it into a retro-tinged, isometric RPG shooter. Has casual game developer Sigma Games created a zombie game that should just be left (4 Dead)? Or is this a new dawn (of the dead) for the casual PC market?

psn-store

Oh look, it’s another lackluster load for us poor Europeans on the PSN Storefront. As our American cousins will no doubt be gorging over Thanksgiving, we have been left with very few pickings, with the likes of playable demos for Comet Crash and Mushroom Wars, some downloadable content for Borderlands and Fallout 3 and a limited edition (read: overpriced) virtual t-shirt for LittleBigPlanet to munch on.

Nevertheless, as always, the full update can viewed after the break.

Retro Reunion: The Neverhood
By: | November 26th, 2009

The Neverhood

[Every Thursday is Retro Day at Gamer Limit, so kick back and enjoy the classics. Feel free to check out our full schedule right here!]

After reviewing Amanita’s flawed masterpiece, Machinarium, not too long ago, I found myself hearkening back to my childhood days, where I constantly immersed myself in point-and-click adventures. Day of the Tentacle is still one of my favorite games of all time, and it will always hold a place as one of the integral titles that moulded me into the gamer that I am today.

The Neverhood may not have had such an immense impact on my younger years, but it certainly struck a chord visually and creatively. Rarely do I come across a point-and-click nowadays where I don’t compare it to Doug TenNapel’s 1996 classic.

If you have never experienced The Neverhood, read on to discover just how much you are missing out on.

Dark header

[Every week, Gamer Limit scours the underbelly of the internet to bring you the finest releases from the indie scene. Check back each week to see what we recommend. Feel free to check out our full schedule right here!]

“Atmosphere” is one of those intangible qualities that every game strives to achieve, yet few manage to convey successfully.  Sometimes, the problem is just that the game attempts too much.

This is where many of the Xbox Live Indie Games derive their strength – simplicity.  Do one thing, and do it well.

Today, we look at Dark, a pure puzzle platformer with atmosphere in spades.
