We all knew that Modern Warfare 2 would be a triumphant success, but the crater this game has left in its first day of sales is truly astonishing.

According to VGChartz, Modern Warfare 2 is on track for becoming the fastest selling video game of all time, taking in over 7 million worldwide sales across all platforms. 4.2 million units were sold in the Americas (3.7 million in the USA) with a further 1.23 million in the UK and 350,000 in both France and Germany. Further to this, week one figures are predicted to accumulate to 10 million, which would overtake GTA  IV‘s previous week one record of 5.92 million.

In the UK, it has grossed a sizable £47 million according to Elspa, who touted the great success as “clear evidence that videogames are now mainstream in the UK” and that “our form of interactive entertainment has completely come of age.” I’m just waiting for Sainsbury’s to take all the credit after selling the game for half the RRP.

borderlands3

[Feel free to check out Shawn Evan's review of the PC version.]

First person RPGs seem to be the industry’s new trend, especially with the success of such critically acclaimed titles like BioShock and Fallout 3. In Fallout 3 the emphasis was clearly on the roleplaying elements involving choice and heavy focus on narrative, while the FPS aspect was, at best, mediocre. BioShock was intuitively crafted, boasting both wonderful gameplay and an engrossing story, but it felt as though something was missing within the roleplaying realm.

Gearbox Software hopes to achieve the ultimate balance of gameplay, roleplaying, and narrative with their latest endeavor, Borderlands. As seen in previous, successful efforts, this balance is hard to achieve. But with superb run and gun gameplay, seamless drop-in, drop-out multiplayer, and a freakin’ bagillion guns at your disposal, Borderlands should not be passed up. Read more… »

Modern Warfare 2 Steam Date

As I reported last week, the release of the Steam version of Modern Warfare 2 was originally pushed back to November 13th, three days after the rest of the world.   Well, for those of us who have been waiting in agony the last 24+ hours as our friends have basked in the greatness that is Infinity Ward’s latest masterpiece, the wait will soon be over.

It appears that Valve has moved the release date up a full day to midnight EST tonight. That’s right boys and girls, the time to kick some terrorist ass using a mouse and keyboard will soon be upon us.  Make sure you have the game preloaded though so you can immediately begin your reign of terror when midnight arrives. Most people who’ve ever talked about video games with me know that I tend to resist titles that attempt to turn back the clock.  Still, I’m only one man, and the demand for such games is through the roof. Countless series in recent years have done this, and the Contra series is no exception.

Here we have the newest iteration; a deliberately old-school experience for Nintendo’s WiiWare. Although I’d love to say that this is a shining exception to my usual feelings on retro gaming, I can’t. It’s a mundane addition to a series that really deserves better.

fairy

In a world dominated by maniacal impersonating wolves, magical beanstalks, and naked kings, it seems as though fairytales have been tailored for the video game industry. Whether Mother Goose intended for this or not is still to be found out by our greatest minds, but one thing’s for sure: fairytales are generally an untapped source of inspiration, and one that could provide wonders to an IP.

With the same logical thinking, Playlogic hopes to capture the magic through their first venture into the developing world, Fairytale Fights. This ain’t yo’ momma’s fairytales… actually, wait, they are; but with enough blood, brains, and dismembered appendages to keep even the most psychotic of us pleased. But will gore alone be enough to keep the masses happy? Read more… »

In just under a week, an internet investigation firm has tracked down the pirate who uploaded Activision’s pampered machine gun-toting toddler Modern Warfare 2 onto the internet. While it probably won’t make the slightest dent in the pirate community, it’s still satisfying to note that justice was served. As much as Activision milks its products, we doubt that theft will encourage them to implement a zombie co-op mode.

Find out how IP Cybercrime, the brains behind the arrest, tracked the pirate down after the jump. Read more… »
