It’s no secret that Borderlands has had a reasonably rough week. Bugs, botched releases, patching problems and various other issues have plagued the little FPSRPG that could, with now buzz across social networks and the blogosphere showing upset in 2K Games’s choice of Gamespy for matchmaking.
Complaints of issues with port forwarding and firewalls are yet another bullethole penetrating the tough shell that has formed around the title. Luckily for players, and Gearbox, a familar face has come back to save the day.
GameRanger, a multi-title matchmaking system, has recently added Borderlands to its reasonably hefty list of supported software, allowing gamers to quickly and easily host and join games without the fuss of installing complex and insecure VPN devices like Hamachi.
You may remember that another release this year, DemiGod, suggested players use the software when many suffered much more severe issues with matchmaking, due to issues with GPG’s custom system of P2P connectivity. In a similar move, Gearbox have unofficially recommended the program as a workaround, and it seems that people are taking that advice in droves.
Scott Kevill, the Perth-based president of GameRanger Technologies, realises that punters are well and truly over matchmaking systems that require dated and obscure workarounds and fixes to work as sold.
“You don’t have to look far to see that PC gamers are fed up with the problems caused by GameSpy middleware after being burned so many times, and now consider it a “warning label” for games.
GameSpy’s dated technology demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of multiplayer networking, and I sympathise with Gearbox and 2K Games having to suffer the resulting backlash for what is otherwise a brilliant game.
“Thousands of gamers have already switched over to GameRanger to play co-op Borderlands hassle-free, and I expect a lot more once they finish banging their heads against the wall in frustration.”

This program is AWESOME!!! I just downloaded it. Great find!! As an Australian, it really sucks ending up on US servers cos of the ping. But now I can sort the games by country and it makes the game experience a million times better.
Thankyou gamerlimit!!

Whoah! I am going to have to try this out! Thanks for the find James.
Excellent, just in time! I just picked up a copy of Borderlands on that two for one Best Buy deal.
I never heard of gameranger, I’ll check it out.
Online play for Borderlands PC is horrendous. Can’t connect to anyone ever.
I tried GameRanger and none of my friends could connect to me using it. However, using a program called Tunngle, we got it to work just fine and have been having a blast running around Pandora.
If you have problems with GameRanger, try out Tunngle. You can get it at http://www.tunngle.net.
