Status update! As if it didn’t already hold enough dominance on people’s inane interweb lives, Facebook will also soon be infesting your PS3 if these leaked screenshots are to be believed.

The images, accidentally published on the official PlayStation website, clearly depict a new Facebook icon integrated into the XMB, along with additional hints of the ability to edit gamercards and a new XMB based photo browser. Coincidentally, a new 3.10 firmware update has also been rumored for release on November 19, but Sony has stated that there will be further information “very shortly.”

You can find the diminutive screenshots after the break. Could this be Sony’s first steps for catching up with Microsoft’s nesting in the social networking family tree?

This could definitely hurt the impact of Microsoft’s new XMB update. On the other hand, I don’t feel like most of my friends really care about Facebook integration on any console. Either way, if it’s true it’s nice to see that Sony is attempting to keep pace with Microsoft.

  2. Microsoft need more services since more diverse features are being added to the PS3 network too. I don’t own a PS3 so please, correct me if I am wrong, you can use the internet, right?

So why would you need this application integrated, when you could just as easily go to the site through your console?

I suppose convenience is an element. :)

  3. Yes, it has an internet browser but Sony did the same thing with the iPlayer application.

Apparently there are alot of complaints about how slowly facebook runs on the PS3’s browser, people have problems looking at pictures and what not. That is atleast the largest sigh of relief coming from the PS3 community that I have noticed since the pictures surfaced.

  5. Yes, the PS3 browser is unnusually slow for most websites. Not only rendering them, but downloading them too. On my laptop or PC next to the PS3, it’s probably a few seconds longer per page load.
