Today, Blizzard expanded their online WoW Shop to include purchasable pets, putting up the “Pandaren Monk Charity Pet”, and “Lil’ K.T., the Littlest Lich”.

Both pets go for a small sum of $10. Will you be getting one?

“Today, we’re pleased to introduce the Pet Store for World of Warcraft, a new way for players to obtain in-game pets to join them on their adventures in Azeroth. Two brand-new companions are now available for purchase exclusively at the Pet Store in the online Blizzard Store: Lil’ K.T. and the Pandaren Monk.

Make a Difference: Pandaren Monk Charity Pet

Enter the Pandaren Monk, a martial-arts expert who’s here to help celebrate the upcoming fifth anniversary of World of Warcraft. He may be cute, but he’s proof that even the softest of critters can overcome the hardest of circumstances. For every Pandaren Monk that finds its way to a player’s side between now and the end of the year (December 31, 2009 at 11:59 PDT), we’ll donate 50 percent of the $10 purchasing price to the Make-a-Wish Foundation in an effort to brew up a little hope, strength, and joy in a child’s life.

Lil’ K.T., the Littlest Lich

Lil’ K.T. is a miniature lich who bears a striking resemblance to the legendary lord of Naxxramas, Kel’Thuzad. But don’t let his diminutive stature fool you: Lil’ K.T. has a diabolical laugh and wields true power at his bony fingertips, randomly wreaking icy havoc on critters who dare to cross his path. You can now buy this new pet for $10 on the Blizzard Store.

In order to receive a purchased pet, you’ll need to merge your World of Warcraft account with a account. For more information on, please visit the FAQ. For more information on the new Pet Store, visit the Pet Store FAQ.”

Personally, I think it’s reasonable for them to milk their franchise with real world cash collectible items, just as long they don’t start selling items that unbalance the game… here’s hoping.

  1. Blizzard could donate the ENTIRE $10 to charity. It’s not like it’s costing them anything now that the development is taken care of.

And still, WoW at $15 per month x 11.5 million people = $172.5 million dollars per month, or $2.07 billion per year. And they STILL want to leech more money from their customers? Hm.

  2. I am so sick of Blizzard implementing more and more micro-transactions! Just like Nick said, they gross rediculous amounts of money but they still want to leech everything from their customers.

This is why I would have left Warcraft already if it were not for my guild (we actually meet in London on a regular basis). I lost all faith in Blizzard as a games developer years ago, there is a line between being a developer who is focused on creating compelling game play for customers and being money grabbing idiots.

Cataclysm is just an excuse to recycle content because they moved their good developers over to their new, ‘secret’ project. Too many MMO players get attached to a single game, and will never leave it just because they have collected so much there, so I guarantee they will make a lot of money out of this.

    **End of rage**

  3. Blizzard wants them dollar bills!

  4. Dan, you are right about people only staying because they’ve got the best gear and stuff. It’s why people stick with certain FPS games, because they like being a big important player.

Blizzard can stick their pets where the sun don’t shine.

If you don’t want the pets, no one is forcing you to buy them. Idiots.
