  1. Kingdom Hearts 2! It made so many improvements on the first game while keeping an extremely addictive combat formula intact – plus, the story is surprisingly deep for a game laden with Disney characters.

  2. This is such a great game. And being as it can run on pretty much any computer, you’d be crazy not to enter the contest. Good luck!

  3. Hellgate : London.

*struggles to keep a straight face*

Okay, I can’t do it. Diablo 2 and Oblivion are both high on the list for me — but I’ve gotta go with Vampire : The Masquerade — Bloodlines.

  4. Diablo & Diablo 2 are definitely my favorites!

  5. You should allow staff participation!!!

  6. Secret of Mana, absolutely.

And I agree with Chase, only because this game looks so awesome!

  7. Tough one….

Probably Balder’s Gate II. Awesome game. Superb dialogue and the combat was truly fun…

  8. I can’t decide which was my favorite but I spent a shit load of time playing Diablo 2 and Gauntlet Legends on the 64. Gauntlet Legends may not have been the greatest game, but I had a lot of fun playing it with friends back in the day.

  9. Diablo 2, hands down. Hell, even after years it’s still popular; a testament to it’s sheer awesome-ness.

  10. I second Baldur’s Gate II. What a fantastic game.

  11. The first Diablo. The ridiculous stories I have about playing that game online are just too amazing to even consider any other game.

My pick would have to be Seiken Densetsu 3. If Secret of Mana wasn’t good enough, SD3 was even better. It implemented a great challenge and the systems were much more balanced, plus the variety & enviroments are fantastic. Plus do I have to mention the story? It’s great :)

  13. Oblivion hands down for me:)

I had a 120 hour file on it that somehow got wiped when I recovered my Gamertag, I was mortified!

  14. I’ve logged in so many hours on many of the games you guys already listed but Baldur’s Gate II is probably the most stand-out game I’ve ever played. I will always remember it fondly.

  15. Fable! Great game. Excellent History!

Titan Quest and it’s expansions were absolutely amazing Action RPG’s, the graphics were crisp and the gameplay was just brilliant. I’m always out looking for the next-best Action RPG (ARPG), and Torchlight might actually be it!

  17. Diablo 2 no doubt. I’ve been playing that game for a decade now, and I’m still finding new things to discover

  18. Fable…the first one.

  19. avatar Anonymous

Since we’re going for the action, i’d say Mass Effect.

  20. Gauntlet Legends on the 64.

    Absolutely Priceless.

  21. Too many awesome games, but I’ll pick The Bard’s Tale (the new one). Cary Elwes as the main character, a sarcastic Narrator. Brilliant game :)

I like Threads of Fate from the Playstation days.

  23. Diablo, the first – without a second thought (Revenant a close second).
Diablo redefined action RPGs from their “Eye of the Beholder”, “Dungeon Hack” and “Menzoberranzan” days and spawned a whole new genre. And it was brilliant.
There were others that introduced me to many novelties (Notable examples> Revenant: Action combat; Nox: PoV occlusion, Dungeon Siege: the mule and the reintroduction of party dynamics; Diablo II: Horadric cube, socketing and runes; Titan Quest: Shared Stash and monsters with equipped items; Silverfall: Arcanum-style Tech vs Nature Duality) but Diablo is stuck in my memory as the precursor to them all.

I remember the discussion whether the Tristram music was performed with an acoustic guitar or some medieval lute – the atmosphere was outstanding. I still recall the dreadful first time I experienced lag on my old 486 when facing the Butcher in the demo (ending in swift death, of course).
Other flashbacks include: Grinding King Leoric and letting him spawn skeletons endlessly for easy cash and XP on low levels… Enemies who would follow you through half a level if you tried to run and even open doors to get to you… The eerie glow of boss monsters in rooms still under the fog-of-war… Unique items which were truly unique… How you could make your warrior into a fearsome battlemage just by assigning stats and spells to suit your playstile – without restrictive skill trees. The golem that presented a distraction long enough to kill Diablo for the first time with my Meteoric sword of Vampirism… The clearing SW of Tristram where my stash steadily grew until I could no longer drop items in town… Having more money than fits your inventory and not being able to buy the item you wanted…
Redoing the whole thing again for more fun and hunting for even better items as shopping couldn’t match them…
…and that was even before the expansion.

I tried the Torchlight demo (got 42min left) and it seems like a proper spiritual successor to Diablo, with some innovations mixed in for good measure (Pet, shared stash, enchanting, phase portals, random dungeon scrolls). And the cartoony style is a nice touch.

  24. I like a lot of them, from Silver to Planescape Torment and from Nox to Diablo II, but the one that impressed me the most in a positive way is definately The Witcher (Enhanced Edition).

  25. Ah I would say Diablo 2, but thats too easy an answer..

Even though they have their cons, Titan Quest an Sacred gave me hours of fun play. Using the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” formula game the best true “hack and slah/dungeon crawler” experience. Awesome fun!

Daggerfall which lead into morrowind obliv and FO 3

  27. Astonishing how some people seemingly define the genre of ACTION Rpg…

My pick would be Sacred. Having been able to play a dwarf with gun powder-weapons in a fantasy-setting was like a dream come true.

  28. Mass Effect also, since we’re going with ACTION rpg.

  29. My favorite action RPG: Sacred 2

I thoroughly enjoyed exploring every part of this new RPG. The graphics were really well done, the story line was fun (and there are at least 5 more for me to explore!) and the side quests were plentiful. There is no need to get bored by going around and killing enemies to build up exp. Also, the re-playability is very high!

  30. I logged many an hour into Diablo 2, until I lost my level 65 hardcore character. Still, one of the best games I’ve played of all time.

  31. I seem to remember playing diablo one and two a lot :P
I know I played Neverwinter Nights a LOT.
More recently I absolutely loved Fallout 3, and Borderlands (for the 8 hours of playtime).

But my favourite of all time has to be Dungeon Siege. One (Definitely not Two)
The multiplayer DS was just so much fun. I Played for days without sleep Lanning with my friends when it came out, and later on in life, I went and bought another copy so my new wife could play it too.
We spent untold hours trawling dungeons (well, mostly clifftops) together, Slaying beasts and (well for her at least) rearranging backpacks.
We have kids now, and DS sits on the shelf, but it will always remind me of those days.

  32. Champions of Norrath and Diablo 2. They are my favorites, but there are too many to list here because I love the genre.

  33. The first Kingdom Hearts. An amazing looking game, challenging, and filled with ample fun.

  34. Diablo 2, it was my first RPG and will always have a warm spot in my heart.

  35. Without a shadow of a doubt, Diablo 2 is my all time favourite Action RPG. Let’s just say that all the other video games that I have played in my entire life does not add up to the hours I have spent on Diablo 2. I mean that literally and am not joking whatsoever. Runic, Colin, and Gamer Limit: Thanks for giving away copies of Torchlight!

  36. Secret of Mana! Spent soooo much time playing that on SNES with friends back in the mid-90s.

  37. Diablo 2, though Secret of Mana is right up there as well.

The Titan Quest games were pretty awesome and epic in both execution and storyline. Immortal Throne added tons of new gameplay and the skill trees were absolutely awesome for customizing new characters so you never felt like you were playing the same game twice with the same character. I can only hope they make a Titan’s Quest 2.

  39. Or I could not be logged in and fail. Sigh. Firefox. Why won’t you keep me logged in?

  40. Nothing since Diablo 2 has really made me hooked for a long time… borderlands has come close but the replayability isn’t there… not for me at least… and well… that’s a little too much action and not enough rpg? Having multiplayer on pc act like an absolute dog has killed a lot of the enjoyment too.

In all honesty tho, I’d want something that Hellgate should have been… it was close… so freaking close… it’s the last game I’ve actually managed to get my girlfriend down to play with me… so while everyone might snicker at using it as my choice… a game that gets my lady involved gets my big thumbs up!

It was far from perfect but if keeping peace in your household is a factor… ;)

Still what live servers are there? none.

Nothings come close to D2 :(

  41. Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana)
Excellent storyline, fantastic music, multiplayer support for you and two friends. What more could you need?

Cute sprites, OCD-inducing weapon and spell leveling? It’s all there!

The icing on the cake though was that Secret had an Australian release, nothing beats being able to actually PLAY the game.

*weeps for the Seiken Densetsu 3 translation that never was*

  42. Giveaway closed, winner will be announced shortly.
