dragonage

With Dragon Age: Origins going gold over the weekend, it comes as no surprise that BioWare and EA are sending the hype train out of the station to make its rounds, settling down in London with a little worldwide competition.

On October 28th, beginning at 10 AM GMT, ten sets of four players will compete within a 24 hour Dragon Age session to complete the “Warden’s Quest”, in an effort to take home a $50,000 prize.

The Xbox Live dashboard update preview program has made its way to a select few. While many have longed for features such as Twitter and Facebook, the dedicated applications may not be for everyone.

The update is expected sometime in November and includes Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm, Zune Marketplace, internet video, and a music games store dedicated to downloads for games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero.

Wait a minute. I thought Playstation 3 already did “everything.” Well, you can now add Netflix to the “everything” PS3 can do.

With a price tag of $299.99, strong NPD numbers, and some of the most widely acclaimed exclusives this year, the Playstation 3 is looking even better with the addition of Netflix support. But when will it be available?

[Hello and welcome to another exquisite edition of The Week in News, your reliable resource of gratifying gaming news brought to you by Gamer Limit.]

Another Sunday has dawned, which means it’s once again time for me to carefully compile every last titbit of gaming news into one bite-sized morsel.

Then again, here in the UK most people will be too busy hurling stones at Mr. Nick Griffin to care for the real world issues that await you after the break. Hurrah for irrelevant topical reference!

Best Buy Geoffrey Giraffe

Remember Toys ‘R’ Us’s “Buy 2, Get 1 Free” deal that was going on a scant few weeks ago?  The one that was supposedly being honored at some Best Buys, despite others receiving explicit memos NOT to honor the price match?  Well, it looks like the BB higher-ups have changed their minds.

October 25-31, 2009: Buy 2, Get 1 Free at Best Buy (PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii games $59.99 or less, excluding pre-orders) in-store OR online.  Also, online orders receive free shipping.

Isn’t that something?  Who needs to eat anyway?  I just wish it applied to DJ Hero

Chuck Norris Apple banner

No longer content with Walker, Texas Ranger royalties from Hallmark Channel re-runs, Chuck “Can Kick-Start a Car” Norris now has an official mobile game.  It’s not just on iPhone, either.  Chuck Norris cannot be contained by Apple alone.

It’s called Chuck Norris: Bring on the Pain.  It brings it.  Hard.

OFPDR

Operation Flashpoint has been popping in and out of my radar throughout most of this year, like some kind of energetic meerkat. I visited Codemasters, and whilst the trip focused more on the DiRT 2 side of things, I think I can breach the NDA I signed to let you know that through a crack in a window I saw a designer putting a wall into the game. That’s right, I had insider knowledge there was at least one wall in this new flashy and pointy Operation Flashpoint.

It wasn’t until a press event for upcoming Codemasters titles that I actually got to see the game in action and even play it. From that moment I was hooked and waiting for this game to come out. But can it live up to the hype I had created inside my head?

blacksigil-3

[Reviewer's note: I suppose an explanation is in order for why a game released in June is being reviewed in October. To be honest, I bought the game upon release to review it, but I became seriously depressed after playing through the first half. It wasn't until about a week ago that I could bear to pick it up again and finally finish it. Read on to find out what kind of game can drive a man to depression.]

Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled is a desperate attempt to hearken back to the ‘glory days’ of the SNES era RPGs. Almost every facet of the game, from programming to art to game design, was worked on by three people who probably think back to the mid 90′s with wistful, romantic nostalgia.

It comes through plainly in the game, which seems to be a Frankenstein-esque fusion of Chrono Trigger‘s gameplay and Final Fantasy 6‘s general story progression. After all, if you take cues from the two best RPGs of the best RPG era ever, what could possibly go wrong? Right?

Halloween is only a week away, and as expected, a lot of gamers will be dressing up as their favorite video game characters.  Long time gamer Kevin Craine would love to do this himself, but he’s more interested in passing this timeless tradition onto his two sons, Jatin and Navin.

This father/son trio became famous last Halloween when their homemade Mega Man, Pit, and Captain N costumes were featured in EGM magazine and on the front page of Destructoid and Kotaku.  Well, a year has passed and Kevin is once again sharing his passion for video games with his sons by creating them an incredible Yoshi and Baby Mario Costume.

Read on to see some pictures of these amazing costumes and to find out more about how they were made. Read more… »

Critter Crunch

Critter Crunch is one of the most adorable games you will ever discover; yet below it’s seemingly simple and cute gameplay lies a deeply complex and challenging puzzle game that will take you hours, or even days to master. The title revolves around the life of Biggs, a weirdly cute jungle creature that is dedicated to feeding his children.

If only it was that simple.

During the BAFTA on Wednesday night, prominent designer Peter Molyneux told those in attendance that developers need to “…defy perceived wisdom”. He also declared that “…the best innovations come from challenging the foundation stones of conventional wisdom.” The five games he has chosen, apparently, do just that.
