Wait a minute. I thought Playstation 3 already did “everything.” Well, you can now add Netflix to the “everything” PS3 can do.
With a price tag of $299.99, strong NPD numbers, and some of the most widely acclaimed exclusives this year, the Playstation 3 is looking even better with the addition of Netflix support. But when will it be available?
“We’re excited to announce today that Netflix and Sony have partnered to bring you thousands of movies and TV episodes streamed instantly from Netflix to your TV via your PS3 system at no extra charge. When the application launches next month, you’ll be able to access and watch thousands of Netflix choices directly through the XMB. We think that the nearly nine million PS3 enthusiasts and 11.1 million Netflix members in the U.S. will make quite a match.”
Initially, Netflix on the PS3 will require a free blu-ray disc for access to all the movie streaming enjoyment. It seems that once an update, most likely PS3 firmware, is provided, the blu-ray disc will be tossed for an XMB application.
Quite a good day for PS3 owners, no? Any of you excited about this news? I know I am!

After thinking about this a bit, odds are this application won’t come as a separate download. That means a PS3 firmware update next month maybe!?
Netflix + cross game voice chat!? That would be yet another huge plus for the PS3 in my opinion.
It would be huge, absolutely! I can’t wait.
Eventually, the PSN might just equal out the entirety of the Xbox Live experience for free. PSN users already get Twitter and Facebook built in with browser support.
I hope Sony forces 100% demo rates for their arcade games: that’s one of my biggest gripes with the PSN.
This is really cool. I don’t own a PS3, and I prefer XBox360, but I’m definitely a fan of having services like this available to all platforms.
I can use this in the UK as well due to the ease of having a US PSN account. I can’t get netflicks on my Xbox360 in the same way.
Incredible News. Welcome to the 21st century Sony.
