jack-the-ripper

That’s right folks, The EA developer Visceral Games is set to make a game based on the real British serial killer; Jack the Ripper. This was stated by an EA spokeswoman alongside the announcement that both upcoming titles, Dante’s Inferno and Dead Space: Extraction will be made without Glen Schofield and Michael Condry.

As an Englishman, I have no doubt that the idea of a game about Jack the Ripper will cause quite a stir. Read on for some background information about the man behind the concept.

Background information on Jack

Jack the Ripper is one of the most infamous serial killers in British history. Never found or convicted for his crimes, he worked in the Whitechapel area which, in 1888, was stricken with great poverty. The name originated from letters that were sent into the London Central News Agency by someone claiming to be the murderer.

All of his victims were women working as prostitutes around the Whitechapel area, most of his victims had their throats cut. 3 of his victims however had some internal organs removed, this led experts at the time to believe he had some surgical knowledge. The amount of precision he used to kill his victims also implied he was the most evil type of killer, one calm and collected about his actions.

My Thoughts

I am honestly bewildered as to the direction they will take with this game. It evokes a sensitive subject of murder around a mysterious figure. As the creators of Dead Space are working on this, I highly doubt it would be a game about investigation and clues. I believe you are more likely to play the role of the Ripper himself. I am quite sure that such a style would provoke a frenzy amongst the general media.

Regardless, it will be some time before we hear some conclusive information about this game, none exists yet. Only time will tell how the media react.

  1. REALLY interesting analysis, Dan. I went from “I could care less” to “this could be potentially better than Dead Space”.

Truth be told, I felt Dead Space was a great GAME, but extremely lacking in terms of story and character development. This looks like it could have it all.

  2. I hope he looks like Johnny Depp.

But honestly, I’ve been intrigued by Jack the Ripper for years. Looking forward to this one.

  3. Really intrigued by this, and it’s nice to see the developers taking a new and interesting route rather than sticking to one IP.

  4. I think the “Jack the Ripper” franchise is something that everyone delves into at some point in their lives. I personally love it all. Dead Space, I have not played but I have witnessed it being played, and it scared the shit out of me :P not so much as Doom 3 or FEAR in the dark but close. I would love to see this made into a decent game – taking the role of the Ripper is an interesting idea also however I can’t really see them getting away with it.

  5. I will try my hand at anything the Dead Space developers make.

BTW … everytime I think of Jack the Ripper I think of the Babylon 5 episode. Who remembers what I’m talking about?

  6. It makes me want to read From Hell, something I keep meaning to do.

  7. Great book, by the way.

But I wonder where they’re going to go with this. Will you play as Jack? Or as someone trying to solve these crimes? I think if you took on the role of Jack, there’d be some serious challenge in crafting a game where your only goal would be to kill prostitutes.

  8. “…your only goal would be to kill prostitutes.”

    So it’s GTA?

    and @ Shawn:

Babylon 5 is still my favorite sci-fi series of all time, and the only one I’ve seen every episode of (even the poopy spin-off!). Still sad that Marcus died. Ivanova wouldn’t even do you! Don’t give her your life force! :(
