Ever heard of PlaySEGA? I hadn’t either, until like five minutes ago. Apparently, it’s this new (still in beta) browser-based service that lets you play old SEGA games!
The catch: you have to pay for a subscription. The good news: it’s only $14.95 for three months, and you get this sweet controller with your paid subscription. Where do I sign up?
Well, you sign up here. You get a ten-day VIP trial and can decide if the controller is worth it after that. They just added about forty Genesis games to sweeten the deal (A.K.A. “Mega Drive” games if you live in the rest of the world).
The service, at least upon first inspection, looks pretty cool, albeit a little “me-too-ish.” You can create an avatar. You can win coins in games that let you enter sweepstakes for cold, hard cash. You can earn a spot on the online leaderboards. You can even (drum roll, please) create your own Sonic the Hedgehog and Stuntmaster Motocross 2 levels that you can upload to the PlaySEGA server for others to try.
If you don’t want to pay the five bucks a month, there are some free ad-supported online games just for signing up. The worst thing that can happen is that it makes you say, “Oh yeah, now I remember… THIS is why Altered Beast was replaced by Sonic the Hedgehog.”
The bottom line: for $14.95, you can get a lot less cool things than a SEGA Saturn-style USB controller. For example, you could get Sonic the Hedgehog… on Xbox 360. NOOOOOOOOO!!!
