You may have heard of a little game called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the seldom-mentioned sequel to an obscure niche FPS from a few years back.
Did you also know that you could play the game in third-person?
Some footage leaked earlier today onto YouTube (now removed by Activision) showed a multiplayer match of MW2 being played from a third-person perspective, a la Gears of War.
Leaked, then confirmed. Infinity Ward’s community manager Robert Bowling (@fourzerotwo) stated on his Twitter page shortly afterward, “Yes there’s a leaked video. Yes it confirms a new Playlist type in #MW2 & yes it’s why I recommend a media blackout.”
Bowling further expounded on its details on Joystiq:
“It’s not something you can toggle on and off in ANY game,” said Bowling. The special mode can only be played in private matches — toggled on or off just like “Hardcore” settings — or in playlists that are designated for third-person play. According to Bowling, everyone playing in a third-person playlist will be restricted to the viewpoint. “This is just another cool way to play the game,” he said, “you obviously will still have the option to play gametypes normal as well.”
The third-person view is obviously more limiting to the player, but we’ll have to wait until release day on November 10th to see how many players actually take advantage of this special multiplayer-only mode. Honestly, I don’t forsee it being nearly as popular as the standard FPS gameplay, especially after a month or two with the game.
I’m anticipating that third-person in MW2 will look just about as dodgy as Oblivion.
Even Infinity Ward can’t prevent information from leaking out.
I can’t see how anyone will use this.
Well, if it works like GoW or Resident Evil 5, it could be very good and give a nice change of pace from the FPS. But if you look like you’re skating on ice like in Oblivion or Fallout 3, then count me out.
Well, I guess it’s nice to have the option, although how many people will use it is a matter for debate.
It’s a nice option to have for SOCOM fans like myself, I’ll definitely give it a try.
erm seriously i just heard people who keep complaining about 3rd person, ehh its just an option right? then if you are a fps player why bother complaining about the 3rd person. ever heard of choices then make some if you are a fps then leave the 3rd person alone
