Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing

The only thing faster than Sonic is the speed at which his latest games make it from the shelves and into bargain bins the world over. But somehow I always manage to muster up a degree of nostalgia-fuelled optimism when Sega announces that the blue critter will be making yet another appearance on our consoles.

Following in the footsteps – or rather tyre marks – of the ultra successful Mario Kart, it appears Sega wants a slice of the mascot-based carting pie. And, dare I say it; their latest hedgehog-filled slice of gaming pie is actually looking rather delicious – as Gamer Limit brings you the latest screens from the upcoming Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing.

Of course, this won’t be the hyperactive ‘hog’s first appearance in a racing title. His earlier race-based outings have not been as much disliked as simply unnoticed. Sonic R is perhaps his most notable offering, receiving critical acclaim but floundering along with the unpopular Saturn.

Rather like his mid-nineties Gamegear titles, Sonic Drift 1 & 2, Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing will see Sega’s beloved mascot, along with more than 20 other Sega characters, behind the wheel of a multitude of vehicles and contraptions. Similar to Sumo’s (the game’s publisher) other Sonic title, Sega Superstar Tennis, each character will have a unique move (an “All-Star” move), such as Sonic’s transformation into Super Sonic, alongside the inevitable arsenal of weapons and power-ups.

Sega have confirmed that the game will have a 4-player split-screen mode, but it will undoubtedly come to life online, with up to 8 players competing for first place amidst blisteringly fast mayhem and carnage. As you can see from the latest screens, the game boasts colourful, almost plasticine-solid visuals not dissimilar to those found in Viva Piñata. The number of courses is still undisclosed, but so far they look rather tasty and positively labyrinthine in their complexity.

The confirmed characters so far are as follows: Sonic the Hedgehog; Miles “Tails” Prower; Knuckles; Dr Eggman; Amy Rose; Shadow the Hedgehog; Big the Cat; Billy Hatcher; AiAi from Super Monkey Ball; Amigo from Samba de Amigo; Alex Kidd and Beat from Jet Set Radio.

Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing will be available in 2010 for Wii, X360, PS3, DS and Windows.

  1. Beat from Jet Set Radio is in it?

My interest went from 0% to 100%, and rising.

  2. This could either be quite a fun lil game or amazingly horrible.

Given my eternally optimistic nature I shall wish for the former. :)

As a Wii owner, I’m worried that we’re seeing screenshots from the 360/PS3 versions, and that I might have a slightly more disappointing experience on the horizon.

But you know what? Beat’s in the game.
    Woo-hoo.

  4. I’m more concerned with the fact that Aiai isn’t in his monkey ball. Doesn’t he get debilitating rashes if he comes into contact with fresh air?

because he can’t play Call of Duty Black Ops in a Super Nintendo, bro*awesome face*as for the video, idk, Call of Duty BO’s cover is pretty girneecI mean, a guy in the shadows, holding a bunch of guns, not really original, would have been a lot cooler if it was like Black’s cover, which was a lot of empty bullet cases and the name, or the alternate one, that was all black, and it had an M4 exploding, with the name on it, man that was kickass
