Way of the Samurai 3 blowout!
By: | September 19th, 2009

ws1

Way of the Samurai is certainly an underdog of a series. Despite my massive interest in the action genre, only just recently did I pick up the first game and experience its splendor.

Simply put, Way of the Samurai is an excellent “choose your own adventure” tale that’s seldom explored in the realm of action games. Now, Way of the Samurai 3 is poised to make a splash on October 13th, courtesy of UFO Games. Hit the jump for a media blowout, including a trailer and various screenshots! Read more… »

[Make sure you check in every Saturday, as Gamer Limit will always have an interesting editorial for you to read!]

With so much emphasis placed upon games, graphics, and online play these days, we sometimes forget about an intrinsic element to our video gaming experience; an element that we could not do without. I am talking, of course, about the controller.

Now, before half a dozen retro fanboys start jumping up and down on the spot shrieking at the insensitivity of not including the Tandy 1000 Joystick, let me preface this article by stating that I have only included the handheld masterpieces that had a huge impact on both the gaming, and popular, cultures.

When one thinks of a “fan service,” not often does one think of an IP that not only meets the requirements of the term, but also goes beyond expectations and delivers a quality gaming experience. Many fan service offerings undeniably fall short in terms of sheer playability and fun-factor, and it seems to have become general practice that if a developer grants the gaming community with a “fan service,” then gameplay can be overlooked to the point of mediocrity. Yet, this undiclosed “rule,” as all rules do, must have an exception to remain viable.

Square Enix, in an effort to become this very exception, has given us the ultimate RPG fan service, pitting twenty-two of Final Fantasy’s most well known warriors and villains against each other. Dissidia: Final Fantasy hopes to break free of fan-service inadequacy and create a new “rule” for all to abide by. Though, with such high expectations, can Cloud, Kefka, Tidus and the rest of the Final Fantasy party retain their individual splendor while proving to be a formidable IP for all to enjoy? Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, has gone on record to clear up any surrounding mists regarding Splinter Cell: Conviction‘s delay. His reason hasn’t deviated much from his initial statements, which claimed that it “…was just a decision to allow us to polish up and really deliver the experience that the fans are looking for.” So what’s the Chief saying this time?

Free-Game Friday #3: Iji
By: | September 18th, 2009

iji
[Free-Game Friday is a new weekly feature in which a writer from the GamerLimit staff looks at a completely free game and discusses their experience with it, allowing you to download it at the end! Feel free to also check out our full schedule right here.]

Few games manage to achieve a level of depth that encourages players to weigh their actions on a moral scale or consider the life of the enemy before deigning to kill them. I’m sure you could name a few titles that manage to go beyond the basic twitch-shooter formula, but when it comes down to it, they’re a rare breed.

A game like Iji is even more unique. A freeware 2D platform-shooter by Daniel Remar, Iji succeeds in areas where so many retail releases fall flat.

Gamer Limit Review: Wet
By: | September 18th, 2009

game_rubi_render01

Themes are the glue that hold stories together. In Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York, he utilized the themes of obsession, love, and time to paint us a picture of a man searching for himself. While he ultimately succeeded at doing this, the themes of the movie are woven so deep that they became tangled. It felt like the movie forgot that it’s ultimate goal was to entertain.

This is Wet’s situation. The game sports a strong theme of stylized action and revenge that succeed in being cool and unique, but it forgets that its ultimate goal is to entertain and involve the player, which it loses in repetitive blood effects and bullet time. Read more… »

During tonight’s BBC broadcast of Watchdog (a British TV show which names and shames retail scams,) a segment cropped up which captured my interest regarding PS3 hardware failures. The feature brought attention to the infamous “yellow light of death,” which results in the console failing to startup in the same vein as the Xbox 360′s red rings of death.

If you are unlucky enough to have exceeded your warranty, then you unfortunately have to cough up the cash, but Watchdog came up with a solution after recruiting a repair team that possessed supernatural powers that can fix a broken PS3. During the show, a total of five consoles were repaired on air in the space of an hour.

Sony however were not best pleased with the report, and responded before the show had even broadcasted – read an excerpt from an open letter they wrote after the break.
