The Metal Gear Solid series, an epic of almost perfect game design stretched over 4 absolutely fantastic games on 3 systems, is undoubtably (and rightly) one of the most heralded chronicles in gaming history. From graphics to sound, tactics to weapons, characters to level design and pacing – it’s unlikely that many other titles come close to demonstrating the power of the Playstation.

Each title pushed the system to its limits, promising and delivering on almost every promise. In each title, Kojima took what made the previous game difficult, and made it harder. Took what made the previous game look amazing, and smashed our expectations. From how the game played, to the journey it took you one, and all of the almost OCD type details that must have taken months to think of and perfect. It was no wonder that each title sold gangbusters and became critically acclaimed before it was even released.

But at the same time, the sheer depth of each title, and the unwavering dedication to build and complete what can only be described as a “write as you go” storyline, provided gamers with a conundrum. Where does a game stop and a movie begin?

After seeing Invincible Tiger promoted at various events, and having the chance to play it in all its 3D glory pre-release, I was heavily anticipating the arrival of this Xbox Live Arcade title.

Despite deep down believing that 3D gaming, and movies too for that matter, to be the resurgence of the same fad, you can’t fault Blitz Arcade for pushing this innovation, or Namco Bandai for publishing it. But can the game muster more than being branded Invincible Tech Demo: Legend of Han Tao? Read more… »

Since the huge success of World of Warcraft, it has been any developing company’s ambition to create a MMO that rivals Blizzard’s spot as king of the genre.  Right now, we’re in a time where MMOs are popping out left and right, but none have had much luck in knocking the kingpin from its throne.  Vogster Entertainment’s latest creation, CrimeCraft, is a direct competitor, as the tongue-in-cheek title implies.

In an attempt to appeal to a mass audience, Vogster Entertainment has crafted a game that takes many elements from different successful titles and crams it all into one title.  Does CrimeCraft successfully fuse all these elements together, or does it fall short as so many of its brethren have?  Hit the jump to find out more. The Rising Virtual Market
By: | September 6th, 2009

Xbox-Live-Preview-Games

Every time we power on our 360s, PS3s, Wiis, or computers, we are jacking into a new world.  The single catridges and CDs are gone, replaced by larger harddrives and quick launch menu systems.

The virtual market (VM) has become the mule of the industry, carrying everything we need, whenever we need it. It has offered us individuality, built the next-generation arcade, and has become the stepping stone for indie developers.

It doesn’t matter if you call it Steam, Xbox Live, the Playstation Network, or Wiiware, all you need to know is that it’s a player in the industry’s evolution. Read more… »

3.0 2

Time to be blunt – the launch of the latest and anticipated firmware 3.0 update for the PS3 seemingly hasn’t gone well. Since its launch, reports have already been surfacing about game freezing and controller issues, which has led to unwanted aggravation for some gamers.

These minor issues aside, the update has promised it has a lot to offer, but was it worth the biblically long downloading time?

Mass Effect
[Every Saturday, Gamer Limit will post an editorial as part of our weekly routine!]

Every once in a while we will hear a news story about some poor, ignorant soul getting sucked into the false reality of online gaming. These people choose the pixelated world over the real one and, in doing so, can often ruin friendships, relationships, and ultimately, their own lives.

Role-playing games, to a lesser extent, provide the same vast escapism as most massively multiplayer online games. While their longevity may not be as perpetual as MMOs, their effect on the player can be just as exhausting and just as detrimental.

Today developer Turbine revealed a new downloadable expansion for the literary based MMORPG The Lord of the Rings Online. Dubbed Siege of Mirkwood, the new expansion comes packed with new features and abilities. Gamers who choose to download the new content will gain access to “The Epic Conclusion to Volume II: Mines of Moria,” an increased level cap, a new skirmish feature and a new 3 and 6 player instance.

According to Jeffrey Steefel, Executive Producer of LotRO, “2009 has been a year of unprecedented growth for The Lord of the Rings Online and the launch of Siege of Mirkwood will end the year with a bang. As the game expands east of the Misty Mountains, players will face the raging war and shadow that has spread across Middle-earth and the new Skirmish system will thrust players and their soldiers into the War of the Ring.”

Halo 3 ODST Live Action Trailer 2

Imagine that you are Bungie studios, creator of one of the most well known highly acclaimed game series of all time.  Now imagine that you have a new title in that series coming out soon, and you need to decide how to market it.  You could probably save a lot of money and simply get away with a short commercial that shows a couple seconds of game footage, followed by the title of the game in huge letters.  That would most likely be enough to sell millions upon millions of copies of your new highly anticipated game.

Or, you could instead spend tons of money to create a live action commercial, featuring good enough special effects to pass for any low budget sci-fi movie.  Apparently Bungie chose the latter, as is evident in their most recent Halo 3: ODST marketing video.  Hit the jump to see this incredible trailer. So yeah, Chad Warden was right, albeit a little inaccurate in terms of timing. The PlayStation 3 (PS3), or PS-Triple, has finally come around all guns blazing, releasing a trimmed down version of the console for a more affordable price. For those who’ve decided to join the bulimic party, we’ve compiled a list of games that you should get cracking with, or alternately urinate on before they burn your eyes.

Here’s a list dedicated to you, Chad! Read more… »
