retrothursday

Do you remember back in the days when gaming was a simpler time? You went to the shop, bought a cartridge, came home and played? Any gamer would be lying if they said a little bit of them didn’t yearn for those golden years.

Nostalgia is important. We here at Gamer Limit know this, and, well, we’re here to help. We’ve managed to get our hands on a exclusive cache of original, recorded, gaming advertisements from the US, Japan, Australia, and even a couple of obscure or banned ones too.

Every Thursday we’ll upload a new one for your viewing pleasure, thus giving you, if only for about 30 seconds, a little visual taste of the past.

All men have a calling in life. Some choose to keep Mother Nature in her place lumberjack style, while others take up the fine art of crocodile wrestling. At a young age, my prematurely descended testicles decided my fate for me – and now my life revolves around giving pleasure where pleasure is due. However, not every man has the goods to be like me. In fact, very few have earned the most important tokens of manliness – chiseled abs, rock hard pecks, and overwhelming bravado.

So, it’s my duty as the manliest of all men to drop some knowledge on every one of you joystick rubbing, cosplay dressing dorks – and that’s exactly what Gamer Limit brought me on to do. My man-vice is going to be the best thing that’s ever happened to this website, and its readers.

As I’m sure you’ve all heard, there is a group of people boycotting Valve’s Left 4 Dead 2. I won’t get into all the reasons, but mainly they are upset because they feel that Valve hasn’t kept their word about free updates for the original Left 4 Dead.

In hopes of swaying these boycotters, Valve recently flew the two founding members of the boycott to Valve’s headquarters to show them the game.

To find out how the two reacted, hit the jump.

Right on the virtual heels of my feature on Regional Game Developers, I went out and into the trenches (or cubicles) to find out what went on behind the scenes of game development in my own backyard. I’m lucky, as my city of Brisbane is host to over 40% of the developers in Oz.

Krome Studios, developers of Viva Pinata: Party Animals and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, are the largest and most successful studio in Australia. Consisting of three separate studios stretched over three cities, over 400 staff and over 19 commercially released games, they are the control standard for games development down under.

They are also a standup bunch of guys who sat down with me to dig deep inside their flagship Brisbane studio to find out a little bit more about their success, as well as what really happens behind the glamour of making games.

DDO Unlimited Logo_Black

Today Turbine, Inc. relaunched Dungeon & Dragons Online, scrapping the previous pay-to-play model in favor of a free-to-play one. In celebration of this, Turbine has released a new trailer letting  soon-to-be adventurers know what to expect when they enter the world of  Ebberon.

Taking gamers to the continent of Xen’drik in the Ebberon campaign setting, DDO provides players with a massively multiplayer version of the classic table-top Dungeons and Dragons gameplay. Although DDO follows the revised edition of D&D 3.5 rule-set, several changes were made due to differences in the dynamics between the media of computer game combat and tabletop gaming. For example, combat is done in real-time in DDO, as opposed to turn base in the table-top game. Don’t let this scare you away though. I’ve been a huge fan of pen and paper D&D since I was a kid and I’m having a blast with DDO.

[Every Wednesday Gamer Limit will highlight an indie title: from the iPhone to the Xbox Live Arcade!]

Getting frustrated at games is usually an easy thing to do. Bryan Mitchell’s Geared gives us all a lot of opportunity to get frustrated at the games staggeringly hefty level number.

Thankfully, Geared’s simple ‘trial and error’ game-play formula doesn’t get too frustrating, despite the sometimes glitchy game-play faults.

Some time ago, Konami mused with it’s life partner about the idea of a new child based on an old property. Well, today, on 9/09/09, at 8AM EST, Contra Rebirth entered the world, and it’s quite strapping! (It also has The Joker in it, as you can clearly see in the bottom right of the header).

Project Needlemouse

Sonic has received a lot of bad press since developers decided to change the incredibly popular games from side-scrolling platformers to glorified chase-fests. However, the long anticipated return of “old school” Sonic is not far away according to Sega associate brand manager Ken Balough.

Balough sat down with GameSpot and confirmed that the upcoming title – codenamed Project Needlemouse – is being made with the intention of appealing to fans who “have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay.”

Hit the jump to check out a teaser.
