[Make sure you check in every Saturday, as Gamer Limit will always have an interesting editorial for you to read!]

The video game market has become so oversaturated with huge numbers of titles that it can be hard to tell the good from the bad.  The only place most gamers can turn to is review scores, but unfortunately the majority fall between the 7.0 to 9.0 range.  What’s even worse is that the same game that is rated a 7.0 on one website will be rated a 9.0 on another.  How is a person supposed to know what makes a good game and what doesn’t.

This is where I come in.  I’m starting a new series entitled “Breaking through game Limitations”, which will take an in-depth look into past and present releases to explain what makes incredible games so great.  This series will not focus on the negative, but will instead strive to only examine the positive aspects of a game’s design. My hope is that you will take away from this an idea of what elements of great game design you should look for in future titles.

The first game I will be taking a look at for this series is Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.  To find out what developer Naughty Dog did to make this title so great, hit the jump. Read more… »

Warriors Orochi 2 looks rather impressive on paper. With ninety-six playable characters, five separate story campaigns, and a bevy of additional modes – one can’t help but be intrigued. Unfortunately, none of these features matter when the game simply isn’t any fun to play.

Regardless of the numbers of characters at the player’s disposal, or the level of depth in the admittedly deep character and weapon customization systems, the core gameplay mechanics behind Orochi 2 are bland, repetitive, and frustrating. Read more… »

Kingdom of Loathing boxart banner

(Free-Game Friday is a new weekly feature in which a writer from the GamerLimit staff looks at a completely free game and discusses their experience with it. Since there is no absolute structure or checklist for writing about one’s experience, these features are not necessarily reviews.)

The first time I had ever heard of Kingdom of Loathing was in a small Game Informer sidebar, many years ago.  Sounded interesting, but as a strictly console-only gamer throughout my youth, I forgot about it shortly thereafter.

About a week ago, I stumbled upon KoL while strolling through cyberspace.  Seriously, I have been missing out.  This game has the best writing I’ve EVER seen in a video game, and the gameplay is not too shabby either.

In a recent interview conducted by our very own James Pinnell, with development studio ‘Krome Studios‘, an interesting tidbit came out…

Apparently their engine has gotten to a stage where it’s no longer harder to develop a PS3 game than a 360 game.

A pleasingly content heavy update has hit the European store this week, including the introduction of dynamic animated themes (including one free of charge thankfully) and an array of playable demos including Fifa 10 and Fat Princess. Couple this with the usual cascade of downloadable content, including the first released content for Guitar Hero 5, and you have a satisfying update to trawl through.

However, there is one thing in particular that has caused a bit of bewilderment, and that is the inclusion of a playable demo of LittleBigPlanet. Considering that the popular game came out over a year ago, its inclusion is puzzling but on closer inspection it sort of makes sense.

On release, LittleBigPlanet struggled to gain initial momentum at the time and then there is the coincidental launch of the PS3 Bulimic and LittleBigPlanet: Game of the Year Edition. The demo is therefore most likely designed to reintroduce itself to adoptors of the new PS3 model who have yet to fall for the smiling Sackboy’s seductive charms.

This week’s update can be found in full after the break.

It’s been known for some time that Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, a crossover game in the vein of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 featuring characters from the popular anime company – Tatsunoko – is being released in America. It has also been known that not all the characters from the Tatsunoko roster would make it into the game due to licensing issues. Lastly, we knew that the U.S release would see new characters from both the Capcom and Tatsunoko sides.

Well, yesterday, a member of the community at Shoryuken.com found something interesting at TvC‘s Japanese website – something interesting which inadvertently revealed all the new characters we’d be seeing in the stateside release.

[Every Thursday, Gamer Limit gives you a blast from the past with either its Retro Reunion or Bargain Bin series]

It’s a sad truth that some of the best games ever made never really manage to sell a lot of copies.  These diamonds in the rough eventually find themselves sitting in the bottom of bargain bins all across the world, waiting for some lucky soul to pick them up and discover their true greatness.  One of these games is the highly acclaimed Beyond Good and Evil.

Developed by Ubisoft Montpellier Studios and released back in November of 2003 for PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, and PC; BG&E was hailed by critics as one of the best games of the year.  Unfortunately, it did not resonate well with the public and posted horrible sales figures, quickly dropping off the charts into oblivion.  Since then, the title has garnered a cult following of beloved fans who adore both the game, and its incredible cast of characters.

Read on to find out more about this extraordinary bargain bin title, which deserves your attention. Read more… »
