I own the game, I only have problem playing the online battling due to lack of a ps3. But I completed basically everything for this game. I can also give out tips on how to make each battle to be either a tactical situation as in fighting a level 100 with a level 50 and win. I've mastered about 20 of the 22 characters. Jecht is actually the most powerful in melee as Cloud is too. The onion Knight and Zidane are the fastest. But the only all around fighter would have to Be Bartz due pardon because of his ever so changing battle formation. He can change from short to long range fighting in seconds because of his mimic battle style. But I owuld have to agree that you can win even if you have no health. You just have to customize your character to in-depth fighting. Like putting on Auto Defense(Omega) that instantly sets the opponents EX Bursts to a weaker state allowing you to survive against what should be 4000 damage but turns in to a mere 76 damage.

In my 200+ hours of playing the game, and the many matches I've played online (Ad Hoc Party mode, look it up), I have to say that this game is pretty balanced. Exdeath is, potentially, the most powerful character in the game. In execution, he is extremely hard to play against the fast characters. Jecht is powerful, but lacks range. He was nerfed, but he can still fight. There is no inherently broken character, and you can play almost anyone and still have a chance of winning.

@Kyazu
The only character I've ever heard of anyone complaining about is Jecht.

@dblhndr
I agree with Chris M. in the sense that 90% of games "lock you out" of certain stories until you complete the others for a reason: so that it can progress in a linear, and clean fashion.

@dblhndr
Yeah, it definitely was a more logical choice, but I didn't really consider difficulty at all when going through the story. But then again, my narrative experience shouldn't suffer because I made a choice that was left open to me for a reason. If they meant for the story to unfold in a linear fashion (as following the difficulty starts would entail), then a choice wouldn't be left open for the player.

@Kyazu
Thats because I didn't find any problem with character balance. I played as each and every 22 characters and it felt balanced to me. Each character has their own strengths and weaknesses, and if you rush your opponent while using a magic user, or rush a magic user using a melee character, then sure, its going to feel unbalanced if you don't know what you're doing. But after getting to know a character's movesets, how they play, how to dodge and counter, and many other advanced battle tactics, you'll see that there is no real issue with character balancing.

If you had played through the story mode in order of difficulty (from one star -> five star difficulties) the story would have made much more sense and would probably have been easier to follow.
So, the fact that the story was rather convoluted and hard to follow would probably be your fault, although it could also be argued that too much freedom gives bad results. Wait, what..?

Going from the easiest difficulty and progressing towards the hardest would probably be a more logical choice than going by the order in which they were set out regardless.

"Gameplay
Besides a few poor camera angles and some story mode mishaps, Dissidia's battle system is a new standard that all 3-D fighters should now strive to achieve."
For a person whose review omitted any statement about character balance, you sound remarkably confident.
