With nearly 680 locations in the United States, retailer Game Crazy will be closing 200 locations by the end of October.  Game Crazy is considered one of the more convenient chains for some, as being attached to Hollywood Video provides consumers with a much larger video game rental selection.

A list of the affected locations is currently being worked. For now, you may want to stop by your local Game Crazy to see if yours will still exist in the near future. But for most, the loss of stores for this small video game retailer will leave a resounding silence.

An official statement, given to Joystiq, from Game Crazy in regards to the closing of almost a third of its stores: “Movie Gallery, Inc. is currently operating in an unprecedented consumer/retail environment. In order for us to continue to best serve our millions of customers across North America we’re addressing underperforming stores and ensuring that there is sufficient [return on investment] associated with each of these stores going forward. The vast majority of our stores will be unaffected by these efforts.”

I can honestly say I am saddened by this news. Being walking distance from a Game Crazy has been a huge convenience for myself. In fact, I pre-ordered Modern Warfare 2 from my local Game Crazy. For now, all I can do is hope, until I set foot in my local store for the good or bad news. Best of luck to those setting out for the news as well.

Any of you going to be affected by the possible loss of a Game Crazy in your area? Back to Game Stop if it will?

    Affected? How about: lost my job? Yeah, it sucks, big time. Hit me at Mach1Powerbomb@aol.com if you want an interview.

  2. We don’t have any Game Crazy stores here in North Carolina, but we do have a chain of stores called Play n ‘ Trade. I used to have one within walking distance from my house, but unfortunately it had to shut down this summer because of falling business.

    Of course the two GameStops up the road from me, which sit a couple hundred feet from one another, are still in business. It sickens me!

  3. Game Crazy was leaps and bounds better than Gamestop…

    @Shawn
    Drive about an hour up north to Virginia, and you’ll find ‘em!

  4. Yay mine isn’t closing! :)

    I spoke to the employees there and they said this location is in great shape. Might be a bit of a stretch, but it isn’t one of the 200!

    For those in the greater DC area, it looks like Germantown, MD and Reston, VA locations will be closing.

  5. This is crappy news. I live in a part of Va that doesn’t have a Game Crazy but I know a bunch of people that use them. Competition is good for the consumer and for a large portion of America’s gamers it is becoming a thing of the past.

    Everyone always complains about how Gametop runs its business and how they love to shop at Gamecrazy. The reasont hey are closing stores and Gamestop is not is the poor business practices af Game Crazy. For example the complaint of the trade values art GC being better then GS while exagerated show that businesses need to give what allows them to operate with a certain margin. If Gamestop starting going wild on trade prices gamers would be happy but how long until thier stores started having profit issues, then we would be back to the dark ages of used games.
    I hope Gamecrazy addresses some of there practices so they can mantain profitable stores so we do not lose another gaming retailer and that all the employees that lost thier jobs are able to find something better.
