Did you just read the title? Stop…and breathe.

Ok. Now that you’re calm, I’ll break the news again. Starcraft II, according to a press release we just received from Blizzard Entertainment, will not make the Fall 2009 lineup, and will be delayed until 2010.

Whilst nearly every single game is being delayed due to Modern Warfare II, Blizzard has stated that  “it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new for the launch of the game.” Read on for the full statement.

Today we announced that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will not be ready for release by the end of 2009. Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new for the launch of the game. The upgraded is an integral part of the StarCraft II experience and will be an essential part of all of our games moving forward. This extra development time will be critical to help us realize our vision for the service.

Our mission is to develop games that deliver an epic entertainment experience. As part of that commitment, we will always take as much time as needed to ensure that our games and services meet the expectations of our players and the standard for quality that we set for ourselves as developers. As we work to make the premier online gaming destination, we’ll also continue to polish and refine StarCraft II, and we look forward to delivering a real-time strategy gaming experience worthy of the series’ legacy in the first half of 2010.

We will share more details about the beta,, and StarCraft II’s launch in the future. Keep an eye on the official website at for updates, and as always, thank you for your continued enthusiasm and support for StarCraft II and all of Blizzard Entertainment’s games.

  1. I should have known better then to get my hopes up. Oh well, it will be totally worth it when it does finally come out …. in 2011.

    “….does finally come out …. in 2011.”

    Sad but true.

  3. Argh.

Doesn’t bode well for Diablo 3 either, given that SC2 is so much further on in development.

  4. Saw this coming a mile away. Once June/July came and went and still no beta this was inevitable. Oh well. Clears more time out of my schedule for other triple A games.

  5. Nobody tell Hitler… He is such as ass when he is pissed.

I was surprised when Blizzard earlier confirmed a Fall 2009 release. I had been assuming 2010 or later since 2008. Oh well.

  7. @Alex

That was hilarious! I don’t know how I haven’t seen that video until now.

  8. Thanks a lot Chris for breaking my heart. Any other bad news you want to obliterate our feelings with? Kill the messenger!

  9. I kinda figured this would happen. Hopefully beta before long!

  10. Chris is like the harbinger of bad news! Thanks buddy …. thanks!

I’m taking bets. Which comes first, Diablo 3 or Starcraft 2?

  12. @ Alex: Hitler got mad when Left 4 Dead 2 was announced too. Who subtitles the same video for 2 (or more) different games?

Would you rather it comes out this year with no online mode? As disappointed as I am, I’m glad that Blizzard didn’t rush it like some 95% of developers. They would have just ditched most of the online play and shoved the game out the door, well-dressed but incomplete.

@Xom shotly.. yes. u can always patch it if it has problems, im sure it still has bugs. but who cares they can fix it. and rushing? please… they have been sitting on it for 2 years they had time to fix and perfect everything. probably only changeing it because it took so much freaking time that it got old compared to the other games.
