MAG

Here’s an important date that PlayStation 3 owners might want to mark on their calendar – it has just been confirmed that MAG (that’s Massive Action Game) will now desecrate the Playstation 3 on January 26th 2010.

Whilst that may seem like a long way away, the game shows tremendous promise and has caused a considerable amount of intrigue, due to its promise of densely populated battles featuring an eye opening 256 online players. To put simply, it has become one of the frontrunners of exclusive titles that the PlayStation 3 so desperately needs, so a lot will be riding on it to say the least.

Whilst Americans will be able to feast on MAG next January, a release date has yet to be confirmed for European territories, which probably means we won’t be able to get our hands on it for at least 6 months later. Until then, you can view a trailer to remind yourself just why everyone wants to be recruited after the break.

Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena

The sheer brilliance of The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay eluded many discerning gamers simply because it was associated with the Chronicles of Riddick films. This was a hugely disappointing realization for now-defunct Vivendi Games, as the title was such a revolutionary first-person experience, and received high praise from critics.

Skip five years and Activision has taken over as sole publisher of the Butcher Bay sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena (AoDA). Does the game live up to the hype of its predecessor, or does it simply fade into the background like so many other movie-based titles?

Developers GRIN were forced to close their doors earlier this week, stating that cash flow problems were the main reasons for their departure. Despite their less-than-stellar swan song videogame Terminator Salvation, the developers did craft numerous fine titles including Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and the sexy Bionic Commando Rearmed.

We’ve just received word from Ubisoft that Allied Assault, a new entry in the Panzer General franchise, is coming to your nearest Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) store. I’d like to think that the War was won by men who were courageous enough to risk their lives for their country. Apparently not it seems, as collectible cards seemingly deal death in this upcoming XBLA title.

It’s great to see the game release calendar for November loosen up a little bit. For many developers and publishers not releasing AAA titles, it gives their new IP a chance to shine in its own time slot.

In the case of Bayonetta, the reason was two-fold. Sega West president Mike Hayes said that there are a lot of concerns among developers regarding the recession. In that respect, the decision of many publishers to push release dates into 2010 is quite logical. The second reason? Translation. Hit the jump to see what else Hayes had to say.

The video game industry posted $848 million dollars in the month of July, which is a 29% decrease compared to the same month last year. While many take this as negative, you have to realize that there is always a real lack of AAA titles in the summer. People might just also spend more time outside.

It’s no surprise that Wii Sports Resort and NCAA Football were striving for top honors this month. If you combine sales on the PS3 and Xbox 360, Electronic Arts beat out Nintendo by 104.8 thousand sales. Nintendo came out on top with DS and Wii sales, with a combined number of over 700 thousand units last month. Hit the jump for a breakdown of all the top sales.
