Operation: Flashpoint defined the war simulation genre. Impeccable detail, intuitive controls, objective freedom, a sense of glory coupled with a large dollop of reality. Not only did you finally feel like a soldier, but the game provided the enormous battlefield and massive armoury to live out your wartime fantasies.

A few games since have tried, with varying levels of success, to replicate the O:FP formula for true operational realism. Has Bohemia Interactive returned with a true vengeance with ARMA 2, or have they pushed themselves too far to trump their successful predecessor?

One of the most highly-acclaimed showings at E3 came from Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction. It was arguably the game that, more than any other, went from zero to a hundred on the “do want” scale during the conference. But, if that wasn’t enough to whet your appetite, perhaps you should hit the jump and watch as Sam Fisher destroys a bathroom with somebody’s head and declares war on everybody.

Every once in a while, a special arcade game makes its way onto the digital distribution highway. As a huge shmup fan, I can’t tell you how excited I am by the ability of the developers of Shatter to take classic shoot ‘em up gameplay and mesh it with a fresh, modern brick breaking style.

Today PopCap announced that its grid-based tower defence game Plants vs. Zombies will shamble its way onto Xbox Live Arcade.

Plants vs. Zombies was met with overwhelming enthusiasm and became PopCap’s fastest selling title. If any of you missed it on the PC, be sure to check it out on XBLA. According to publisher EA, Battlefield 1943 sold a record breaking 600,000 copies on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Considering each game sold brought in $15, that means over $9,000,000 changed hands for this game. Battlefield 1943 is now the fastest selling title on both Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

Producer of Battlefield 1943, Gordon Van Dyke stated, “We are honoured by the reception that the game has received so far. Watching and participating in this non-stop multiplayer action has been a real treat for us and we can’t believe how fast our fans reached 43 million kills. Sony’s awesome Wipeout HD gets a new lease of life today with the Fury expansion. Adding to the game eight new tracks, thirteen new ships and three shiny new game modes to get your teeth into.

The first new mode, “Eliminator” is sure to be the mode of choice for lovers of high speed explosions. Players have access to the full arsenal of weapons in the game to use on their opponents. The winner being the one with the most points at the end.

By now, every single music or gaming fan should have heard about Harmonix and MTV teaming up to launch the Rock Band Network. It’s a program that will offer bands the chance to upload their songs onto the game, and have some freelancing button-monkeys work out the programming logistics.
