Confidence in the banking system is key to financial stability.  Without this confidence any monetary system would fall into crisis and ultimately fail.  As it turns out, the MMO Eve Online is no different.

One of the games largest financially institutions had 8% of its 2.6 trillion kredits stolen, resulting in many players rushing to the bank to retrieve their in game money; producing a unique financial crisis from within Eve.

This robbery was executed by the player Ricdic who was the banks CEO.  He ended up stealing a total of 200bn kredits which he promptly sold for £3,115.

Ricdic is a 27 year old Australian working in the tech industry.  He used the money earned from the theft to pay off some medical bills and put a down payment on a house.

When asked about the robbery Ricdic had this to say.

“I’m not proud of it at all, that’s why I didn’t brag about it, But you know, if I had to do it again, I probably would’ve chosen the same path based on the same situation.”

The rules of Eve Online strictly forbid any trading of kredits for real money and as a result Ricdic has been banned from the game.

  1. This game is absolutely insane. It’s probably the most serious gaming experience I’ve ever seen.

More power to him, I would have traded the full 100% of credits. If the only repercussion is a ban from the game, hell, I’d take ~£40000 in exchange for never playing again.

  3. The ban was only because he sold the credits, not because he stole them :D

This meta-game sorta stuff is what makes Eve so amazing. I love the game but cannot play it due to the sheer timesink that it actually is.

Yeah, Eve Online is definately one of the best games to read about. I don’t think I’d have the patience/time/stones to actually play it, though.

  5. More than anything, this actually makes me want to play the game even more… how cool is it that this kind of thing can actually happen in a game? Kinda makes you wonder if the whole world’s economy is just a computer program too. Conspiracy theories DUM DUM DUM!!!!
