Today ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Softworks, announced that it has acquired id Software (Doom, Quake, ect.).
ZeniMax stated, “id Software will continue to operate as a studio under the direction of its founder, John Carmack. No changes will be made in the operations of id Software in the development of its games. All the principals at id Software have signed long-term employment contracts, assuring they will continue in their roles…at the studio.”
From now on, Bethesda will publish all future id Software titles, with one exception. id’s upcoming first-person shooter/ racing game Rage will be published by EA due to an agreement made last year.
John Carmack, founder of id, stated, “As trite as it may be for me to say that I am extremely pleased and excited about this deal, I am. This puts id Software in a wonderful position going forward.” He went on to say, “We will be bigger and stronger, as we recruit the best talent to help us build the landmark games of the future.”
Personally I don’t know what to think about this. I always had a soft spot for id. I mean, who didn’t grow up playing Doom or Wolfenstein 3D? As of late I’ve felt that id’s work has been lacking. Doom 3, while highly polished and fun, didn’t really break any new ground in the FPS genre. Hopefully ZeniMax will light a fire under the developer so that id can return to its former glory.
