Recently, the lead designer for Mass Effect 2 was asked via the Mass Effect forums, whether the original game’s “new game +” option would be in the sequel. For those who aren’t savvy, “new game +” is simply the option to play the game over again from the beginning with your end-game character’s abilities and/or gear. Bioware responded with “the short answer is no”, stating transition issues between Mass Effect 2 and 3. It seems like enduring multiple playthroughs with one Shepard wouldn’t quite work when they started tinkering with Mass Effect 3′s character transfer mechanic.
I’m a huge fan of any game that includes a new game + option, but Mass Effect 2 seems to have the situation under control. My additional guess is that Bioware doesn’t want you to get too attached to “one Shepard”, and will want you to experiment a dozen times with whatever you can throw at the game before you’re positive you want to move onto the final chapter in the series’ trilogy.
