thq

Publisher THQ, much like the entire games industry, has been forced into making some tough decisions over the past year or so. Top of the list must be their job cutbacks, reaching a total of 550 people from across the many facets of the company.

While seeming like a large number and a cruel step to take, it is one that THQ feels is proving to be justified, pointing out that titles such as Red Faction: Guerrilla may never have happened had they continued the way they were going.

ModNation Racers

I find it difficult to put into words how sickened I am by the current state of play within gaming. The three major console manufacturers are busy flexing their technological muscles, showing us who can make people look like the biggest prats in their own living room – an invisible skateboard ramp here and a twelve year-old imaginary friend there – all the while failing to realise that nobody actual wants to move about while they play.

lguy

The Last Guy is a top down side-scrolling game in which you play as a zombie in a red cape trying to herd a conga line of screaming civilians back to a spaceship.  Meanwhile, you have to avoid other zombies who range from super fast giant bugs to rolling eyeballs. Sound strange? That’s because it is, and yet it’s one of the more unique and charming titles on PSN.

There isn’t really a storyline to speak of.  A purple ray struck earth and turned everyone outside into zombies, and everyone else is trapped inside and needs to be rescued. You play as a zombie from the Himalayas.  For reasons unknown, he wants to lead the normal humans to safety as opposed to eating them. Read more… »

Sunday Soapbox: PSP No-Go?

psp-go1

When I first clapped eyes on the initial images of PSP Go, I was considerably unmoved. And now it seems that retailers are becoming equally pessimistic about the launch, having forecast a retail disaster earlier this week. Things are not boding well for PSP Go.

As reported on Gamer Limit, these independent retailers are becoming concerned by an apparent lack of interest towards the console, after it failed to attract any pre-orders whatsoever. And it’s not hard to see why.

I’m sure most of you have seen the original “World of Warcraft cancellation freak out kid” by now. For those who have been actually playing WoW nonstop during the popularization of this video (if I still played, I know I would have!) the basic premise is: some kid’s mom cancels his WoW account, and starts throwing a temper tantrum. His brother “cleverly” hides a camera inside said freak out kid’s room, and hilarious ensues. Some people think it’s actually a real video, but if you watch the original, he’s clearly acting.

Regardless of the origin of the clip, the original is so loosely related to video games it would be hard to justify a post, but this particular Japanese created gem remixes the kid’s screams into a beautiful rendition of one of the best tunes from Kirby. Follow the jump and humor a medium suffering a slow news day. Read more… »

Recently, the lead designer for Mass Effect 2 was asked via the Mass Effect forums, whether the original game’s “new game +” option would be in the sequel. For those who aren’t savvy, “new game +” is simply the option to play the game over again from the beginning with your end-game character’s abilities and/or gear.  Bioware responded with “the short answer is no”, stating transition issues between Mass Effect 2 and 3. It seems like enduring multiple playthroughs with one Shepard wouldn’t quite work when they started tinkering with Mass Effect 3′s character transfer mechanic.

I’m a huge fan of any game that includes a new game + option, but Mass Effect 2 seems to have the situation under control. My additional guess is that Bioware doesn’t want you to get too attached to “one Shepard”, and will want you to experiment a dozen times with whatever you can throw at the game before you’re positive you want to move onto the final chapter in the series’ trilogy. You can find the original forum post here. Read more… »

Announced yesterday afternoon, Capcom’s Marvel vs Capcom 2 is being pushed back to the end of July this year. In what appeared to be a rumor circling around about a release date for June 29, a Twitter update cleared the air about the official release date for MvC2.

MvC2 is not actually coming out on June 29, sorry guys. Not sure where that rumor came from, but it’s going to be closer to the end of July.Read more… »
