Every so often there’s a game which takes elements from genres that you don’t usually find interest in.

In the world of video games, developers have struggled to present morale choices in a way that lends any real weight to them.  With infamous, developer Sucker Punch aims to make listening to your conscience harder by putting you in the scorched shoes of an unlikely super hero who gained electrical powers from a massive explosion.

Memories: Silent Hill
By: | June 16th, 2009

silent_hill-1

Do you hear the radio static? It’s getting louder and louder as you walk forward. Your flashlight illuminates the room, but you still feel uncomfortable about your surroundings. Whispers and footsteps surround you, but no one is there. The building then starts to decompose. Monsters start to appear and the music gets louder, making you run for your life; you try to exit the building as soon as possible. You exit the building, but the thick fog limits your vision, making you feel uneasy.

This Memories segment will be a little different from the previous ones. Instead of focusing on one game, this one will focus on a series. It was originally going to be about Silent Hill 2 due to its magnificent story, but the other installments were too good to ignore – well mainly the first and third one. They all brought something to plate and made them stand out from other horror games.

vidzone_ps3

On Thursday, the European PSN store was updated with a little known, and underhyped addition – Vidzone.

Not a game, or part of any other Playstation system or Network, Vidzone is an interesting PAL only addition to the PS3 application suite. Why? Because it’s offering up high quality, streaming, full screen music videos at the low, low cost of absolutely zip.

Sound interesting? Hit the jump for my hands on impressions.

The long-running battle to become the UK’s version of America’s ESRB is now over, with the Pan European Games Information (PEGI) ratings system standing over the shattered corpse of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). Well, that’s not exactly true, as the BBFC will continue to rate films as well as DVD and Blu-Ray content for the region. Then again, games are overtaking films anyway. Does that make the BBFC a zombie?

A more interesting development in the case mentions that it will now be illegal to sell a game rated 12+ to minors, an action even more strict than US retailers’ self-imposed restrictions on selling Mature-rated games. Now, even arguably bloodless action games will be removed from the hands of British tweens. Now you will know that the person screaming obscenities at you over the microphone is 18 years or older.

pain_the_hoff

A Blu-ray disc version of the best selling PSN title PAIN is to be released next week on June 24.

PAIN was a very unique title, previously only available as a download on the PSN, whereby the object was to inflict as much sadistic brutality as possible on a hapless character, by using a slingshot to propel them into various pain inducing objects, such as buildings, cars or even bystanders amongst many other things. Events were subsequently chained together, as you had to keep the momentum up in order to score the most points, so there was also an element of challenge, too. And who could forget those hilariously exaggerated rag doll physics?

starforce4

After the string of controversy and burning effigies* that surrounded the much maligned StarForce, many would be surprised to hear that they are actually still in business. Like some kind of undead creature, the silver bullets of mass developer desertion only seemed to wound them, and thus they have resurfaced from the dust and expressed a possible resurgence in an interview with Gamasutra.

Whenever your big brother is just as popular as your cousin, Halo 3, you’re left realizing that you may or may not be able to claim your space in the spotlight. I suppose you could consider World at War to be the “little fps that could”, because these are some respectable sales numbers.

Since November 2008, Call of Duty World at War has sold over eleven million units, and the folks at Treyarch and Activision wanted to say something nice to you…
