Crytek and Electronic Arts have confirmed that they will be joining forces to release a multi-platform sequel to the highly-acclaimed, PC-only FPS, Crysis. EA will publish the already announced PC version of Crysis 2, along with newly revealed releases for both Xbox 360 and PS3.
Crytek’s newest game engine, the CryENGINE3, had previously been shown running on both Sony’s and Microsoft’s consoles, but this is news signals the first official confirmation of what console gamers have been hoping for since the 2007 launch of Crysis.
“The development of Crysis 2 marks a major stepping stone for our studio,” Crytek CEO and president Cevat Yerli stated. “This is not only the next game in the Crysis franchise, it’s the first title we are developing for consoles and the first title being built on CryENGINE 3. We are excited to have the support of EA Partners again as we work together to make the launch of Crysis 2 a huge event.”
Sony will be hopeful that the graphical progression seen in the CryENGINE 3 will push the processing power of the PlayStation 3 to greater heights, perhaps even revealing a few Xbox 360 weaknesses along the way. But maybe not.
