This really isn’t funny. Being a fanboy for one company or another is one thing, but it doesn’t matter where you align yourself in the console war. No self-respecting gamer should wish another company to fail, or have to cut back jobs. It looks like we need to rally behind Sony.
For the first time in fourteen years, Sony has reported a major loss. Sony reported a net loss of 165.1 billion yen for the fourth quarter and a net loss of 98.9 billion yen for the fiscal year ended in March 2009. Perhaps the coming year will bolster their sales on the Playstation 3 side of things.

This is not surprising since they are primarily a Japanese company who’s main sales comes in all types of electronics. Japan has pretty much been the hardest hit country from the recession because of their export based economy. Their GDP is expected to shrink 12% this quarter.
Was there a post like this made when Microsoft had to slash jobs? It’s never fun to be one of the many victims of the economic strife, however why would I back Sony any more than any other company? Sony isn’t even a domestic enterprise so what reasons would I have to support them with my remaining resources instead of someone like Chrysler, who just announced the closing of almost 800 domestic dealerships.
Just wondering…
I don’t own a PS3, so I suppose I wrote it from that perspective.
What’s the conversion of yen to US dollars? I’m too lazy to convert!
@ Chris B
I think the sentiment here is to support the gaming industry as a whole, and to hope for economic recovery for us all. In an age of globalization, recession in the US affects Japan affects Europe affects everyone. The point in mentioning Sony is that it’s surprising; Sony usually does well. With studios closing everywhere, let’s hope we all come out of this alright.
1 yen = 1 cent
Yen / 100 = Dollars
1 billion yen = 10 million dollars
This is probably more t do with their electronics (Bravias, etc) and music division that the PlayStation side of things. It’s a shame but every single company in the world (more or less) is making a loss right now.
Anyway, I blame Steve, who needs to buy a PS3 sharpish.
I’d be more inclined to feel sorry for them if they hadn’t just pulled that dick move with Ghostbusters
