As you may already know Wii MotionPlus is Nintendo’s latest effort to give their gamers the most realistic motion sensing possible. Boasting an impressive 1:1 response ratio, the Wii MotionPlus will attach to the bottom of the existing Wii controller and work in combination with the accelerometer and sensor bar to arguably give players the most realistic precision and immersion in gameplay.
“The aiming of the ball is taken to a more literal level so where you finish your swing is where you’re going to place the ball” said Thomas Singleton producer of EA’s upcoming Grand Slam Tennis. The new technology will give wannabe Andre Agassi’s the ability to more effectively place the ball on lines and force your opponents to return your shot with a forehand or backhand.
Wii MotionPlus will also give you the ability to control the curl of the ball after a hit with a turn of your wrist, an element that will be recognized by ping-pong aficionados as essential. Players with MotionPlus and without will be able to play together. However, the player with the Wii MotionPlus will have a more consistent shot and the ability to have more control on his/her backswing. “They’re different experiences and it really depends on what kind of experience the user wants. That’s the beauty of Grand Slam Tennis, it’s as accessible or as complex as people want to make it” added Singleton.
Grand Slam Tennis will include a large lineup of 23 characters, including the famous car jumping John McEnroe. EA says that Grand Slam Tennis and the Wii MotionPlus will put the racket in the palm of your hand and it will seeing how Grand Slam Tennis will include Wii MotionPlus in the box. I think the real positive here isn’t the improved gameplay, its the fact that the Wii MotionPlus will add more substance to my Wii remote…improving damaged caused to the back of my roommates head.
The Wii Motion Plus will be available June 8, the same day that Grand Slam Tennis ships (optionally together). You can view the Q&A session with Grand Slam Tennis Producer Thomas Singleton on the EA website.
