It has been revealed that upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive electricity-wielding sandbox inFamous will ship without any English voicing outside the UK. This has led to a backlash from many Europeans who would prefer not to be forced into playing a game dubbed in their mother tongue.

A few days ago, a concerned gamer wrote a forum post on developer Sucker Punch’s official website claiming that the move would be a “failure beyond belief”, provided the rumors were true. BrianF, a moderator on the site, confirmed the news:

“There are in fact THREE builds covering traditional “Sony Europe” territories…

#1 = English, Portuguese, Russian
#2 = French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch
#3 = Polish

We had to do #3 because the OS doesn’t yet support polish.

We split #1 and #2 at Sony’s request.

I’d love information on this “failure beyond belief” point of view, for future projects at a minimum.

Thx,

What followed was a mixture of concern and bewilderment from prospective buyers of the game. While many understand that Sony have ultimately made the decision, some believe that Sucker Punch could have had more of a say in the matter.

In particular, the Dutch seem more affected by this than most. The author of the post claimed that he or she hates the idea of playing a game with Dutch dubbing. Meanwhile, the view throughout the forum is that, regardless of nationality, most want to play the game in English and believe that the tactic is merely designed is to stem the flow of importing the game from elsewhere at a lower price.

Sony may or may not listen to these opinions, but the words “preorder” and “cancel” being thrown around will certainly raise a few eyebrows.

What do you guys think? Do you live in Europe and prefer playing games in English? Or do you welcome the idea of playing inFamous in your native language?

  1. This clearly could have been explained more thoroughly beforehand. Hell, the announcement would have probably made headlines on slow news days like today.

  2. I would have thought the complaint would be if they had no choice but to listen in english
