September 4, 2009 is the day Hollywood and video games will redeem themselves on the big screen. Based on the trailer alone, the new film, Gamer, will figuratively make you blow chunks in your pants. Look out fanboys and critics alike because the future of video games and Hollywood cinema just found the power up and won the game.
In the past we’ve been shunned and beaten with some horrible video game cinema, and we’ve also been blessed with some gems like Wargames, Grandma’s Boy and Tron. These films did not focus on one particular game, but they were a generalized view of the affective potential video games will have on our culture no matter what the age. Based on the premise, Gamer does just that.
Michael C. Hall (the star in Dexter) plays the role of Ken Castle. He has created a new interactive experience where players are able to control other humans in his new game called “Slayers.” Mind control is the new fad these days. Gamers use death row inmates as their player of choice. If the player can keep the inmate alive through 30 matches then he or she is allowed their freedom.
Gerard Butler (King Leonidas from 300) is the feature innmate who is just three matches shy of release. Wrongly imprisoned for crimes he did not commit, he is forced to fight to return to his loved ones and to exact his revenge. Move over Deathrace because there is a new game in town, and it does not require over powered vehicles and Jason Statham.
