A tenacious 22-year old FIFA 09 fan has scooped the grand prize at the FIFA Interactive World Cup 2009. Bruce Grannec, from France, took on and conquered the 32-man Grand Final at Port Olympic, Barcelona to win $20,000 (US) and a brand new KIA Soul – that’s a car!
Having attracted around 500,000 entrants, the FIFA Interactive World Cup 2009 was the most successful FIFA tournament yet. After seven months of qualification, involving players competing in both online and live knockout phases at locations around the globe, including New Zealand, South Africa, Denmark, Brazil and India, the Grand Final was attended by a crowd 8,000 strong.
“I am very proud of this victory”, said Grannec, who will receive a FIFA diploma in front of his real-life footballing heroes at the next World Player Gala. “It pays back hours and hours of practice which prepared me to compete on such a big stage. It proves that, if you work hard, you will have success.”
Hats off to Bruce and commiserations to Mexican Ruben Zerecero, who got beaten 3-1 in the final. I need to get practicing for next year, particularly if EA are so kind as to offer a similar prize again.

Wow, that’s a whole lotta soccer to be played. Then again, that’s a whole lotta moolah, too. Hell I’d probably play the game too if I knew there was that kind of cash in it for me.
