gamerlimitdsiFighting words are being dished out by SCEA’s director of hardware marketing, John Coller, as he directly attacks Nintendo’s efforts to reach broader demographics in a recent statement from Sony Playstation on PSP and competitive landscape.

If Nintendo is really committed to reaching a broader, more diverse audience of gamers beyond the “kids” market that they’ve always engaged, there isn’t much new with the DSi to support that. Significant gamer demographic groups are being ignored, and there continues to be limited opportunities for games from external publishers to do well on the DSi. Compare that with the PSP platform, where we have many blockbuster franchises from our publishing partners launching this year, representing a wide variety of genres and targeting diverse demographics. Games such as Rock Band Unplugged from MTV Games, Assassin’s Creed from Ubisoft, Dissidia Final Fantasy from Square Enix, and Hannah Montana from Disney demonstrate the commitment that publishers have to the PSP. From our own first-party studios, we’re launching unique versions of LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm, and we’re also planning a steady stream of downloadable games — both new titles and PSone classics — to add to the content that PSP owners can already purchase wirelessly through PlayStation Store.”

Is this valid criticism, or the last ditch effort to make a dent in the portable market currently dominated by Nintendo?

  1. Hmm… somebody is jealous. ;D

  2. There is a Grand Theft Auto game for DS.

Case in point: DS is not always for kids.

I think what they meant to say was “DSi is for people of all ages who like to have fun”, and “PSP is for people who want to play PS2 games on public transport”

  3. Whilst they do have adult games, you can see the point in which the majority of games are seemingly at a child audience.

However, as you mentioned “people of all ages” is Nintendo’s demographic, as alot of the time whether a game is cutesy or filled with blood the thing gamers care about is whether the game is any good, and Nintendo certainly have good games.

Got my DSi the other day and the first game for it, GTA. Most definitely not a childs game.

Point taken that Nintendo delve deeply into the younger market, but this sounds more like Sony are jealous of Nintendo’s success.

  5. ”Hannah Montana from Disney demonstrate the commitment that publishers have to the PSP. ”
Oh my gosh, they’re so right. Hannah Montana is way more hardcore then Chinatown wars (Which is shovelware with a layer of hype).
