shadow Shadow of the Colossus Theater bound

Probably trumping most other news for surprise of the week, Shadow of the Colossus has been tentatively picked up for a feature film adaptation, Kotaku reports.  Details at such an early stage remain scarce, with little more than writer and producer named thus far.

Hit the jump to satisfy your morbid curiosity.

The script is set to be penned by Justin Marks, the man behind, most notably, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li; other writing credits include Fast Forward, The Stranger, and Unbroken, with Hack/Slash due out later this year.  Production will be helmed by Kevin Misher of The Rundown and The Scorpion King.

Ben Fritz of Variety, a friend of Marks, suggests that the Shadow’s minute main cast may be filled out by a number of characters who make a brief appearance toward game’s end, and who would perhaps assume greater prominence in the film:

‘I understand the folks working on the project are planning to have some of the characters who appear only momentarily in the game, such as those who try to track down and stop Wander, play bigger roles in the film.’

The movie’s release date currently lies somewhere beyond the horizon, and is, as Fritz further notes, by no means guaranteed:

‘As always, I do want to remind excitable gamers that getting set up a studio is still very far from actually making it to the big screen. Nonetheless, this is a pretty exciting first step for a not-too-obvious candidate for videogame-to-movie translation[.]‘

One can only hope that cake and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test movie.

The game would make an interesting if done correctly. By all indicators above, this project WILL NOT be done correctly.

If I had to make SOTC into a movie, I’d either do it in a very realistic Japanese anime style similar to Ergo Proxy, or in a highly stylized live-action style similar to 300. As it is, I’m signing up for the grief counseling ahead of time.

I agree with Novan 100% regarding how good it could be, and how wrong it will most likely be made.

“Shadow of the Colossus” was one of the BEST games I ever played.
I really really hope they make it as it should be.
