Prepare…for Nightmares!

Well I don’t know if a new Strategy RPG by Atlus is quite that scary, but I can pretend it is! Atlus has just released a new trailer for Knights in the Nightmare, and personally, I think it’s action packed. I can certainly dig the art style, and the narrative techniques remind me of Odin Sphere; which only means good things.

Those of you keen to become the master of your own swing, the main man of living room lawn tennis or the next in line to steal Tiger Woods’ shine, are about to become one step closer to your goal. EA Sports have officially announced that both Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (I was wondering what they would call it) and Grand Slam Tennis will arrive in Europe bundled with the new Wii MotionPlus peripheral.

Floyd Mayweather

When a teenage schoolboy got his ass handed to him during a game of Fight Night against an anonymous online opponent, his response was to send a message simply asking: “Who do you think you are, Ricky Hatton?”. Close, but no cigar! The reply came back: “Actually, I’m Floyd Mayweather” – the only man to have knocked out Ricky Hatton, funnily enough.

brutal_legend12I’m not sure what it is about this game. There has been a slow, but steady amount of excitement growing for Brutal Legend. Starring Black Jack, it almost seems as if you’re going to be rocking and rolling with cavemen? I don’t know. The hype wagon just took another steady leap in the right direction with an announcement of the release date.

stephenfry

Without doubt, one of the single greatest things about LittleBigPlanet was the narration from the legend that is Stephen Fry. OK, so it played a fantastic game, but that voiceover from Fry really gave the game that touch of character and class it needed to make it grade-A stuff. So, it’s with no small amount of glee that we can reveal that he has all but confirmed his role in the next installment, via his – yes, you guessed it - Twitter page.

The Tekken fighting franchise can be considered one of the best, it’s up there with the likes of Street Fighter and Guilty Gear, although it’s always been in 3D. Tekken 6, a game already out in the arcades, is set to be unleashed on home consoles later this year. Recently a new trailer has emerged, and it’s here to ask you one question; What do you fight for? ps2-memory-card

The memory card holds a special place in my gaming heart. One of the evolutionary aspects of console games, memory cards pushed past the battery backup conundrum and allowed games to store larger amounts of information and push the onus of control to the player. Rather then forcing players to use passwords or restricting save points to “slots” on cartridge batteries (which die), memory cards allowed transportation of data between consoles and opened up a whole new world of innovative techniques and game elements.

With the venerable memcard losing ground to the hard drive, I’ll still look back on the little piece of plastic as one of the best parts of gaming for myself over the past decade in gaming. But before we can appreciate the memory card, we need to look at what used to exist before the system of portable storage was developed. We’ve come a long way, and it was definitely a rocky road.

ninja_blade_01

Ninja Gaiden is a really good game; it has amazing boss fights and thrilling action which leaves you challenged at every point through-out. But guess what? This review is for Ninja BladeNinja Blade isn’t a terrible game, but along those same lines it can’t be said that it’s anything more than a “good” game.  If you are to take only one thing from this review, know that you’ll find a decent game, but nothing more.

Ninja Blade tries really hard to be a great game, or more accurately, it tries really hard to be like Ninja Gaiden.  So much so, that even the games main character, Ken Ogawa, is suspiciously similar to Ninja Gaiden’s protagonist.  It’s not that homages and clones are inherently bad but there are plenty of games in existence which attempt to clone other games and pull it off very nicely, sometimes even improving on the original formula.  Ninja Blade attempts this strategy but is plagued with a common theme of mediocrity.
