Perhaps in a first for the gaming industry, a development team wants to split and take their flagship franchise with them. It has been revealed that the team behind the seventeen year old Mortal Kombat franchise has grown increasingly frustrated with the way that Midway is handling their bankruptcy problems. The Mortal Kombat team is in talks with other publishers, and wants to leave Midway for what they hope can only be a better working environment.

An interesting tidbit of information is that the team responsible for Mortal Kombat vs. D.C is not under any contract to stay with Midway. However that means that if they can find another publisher to work under, and studio to plug into they may not be able to take their beloved franchise with them. According to the developers of MK vs. DC leaving behind work on the next entry in the series would be “tough”.

Midway’s response to all of this is that the team is in “good shape”, but they cannot pay out the bonuses due the team due to the unsecured creditors committee holding Midway back. If the core team behind the franchise should pack their bags and move on it would be another devastating blow to the already burdened publisher.

  1. Can understand wanting to split from a failing publisher, but trying so hard to keep this franchise just makes them seem like a one trick pony to me.

    They better go to CAPCOM….

  3. Why they didn’t go bankrupt after Mortal Kombat 4 is beyond me.

It would be cool if they wnet to Capcom Mortal kombat versus Strete Fighter my dream come true..Well i doubt that will happen as longas i get tos ee scorpion in another mortal Kombat im happy!

  6. I’m surprised Midway and Capcom haven’t found a way to make MK vs. SF happen.

I wouldn’t call it a first as I’m sure the guys at Infinity ward would have been happy to take the Medal of Honor name with them when they left EA and that’s only one example (Tim Schafer comes to mind). Either way, I wish the team and Midway the best of luck.

One thing the article doesn’t mention is where Boon and Tobias lie. I know one of them had pretty much moved on already, although I can’t recall which. What of the one who’s still with Midway? He wants out too?

  8. Didn’t really say. Both the developers, and Midway we’re being kind of cryptic in all the source information that I scoured.

  9. I’m surprised it took them this long to realize splitting would be a good idea
