If news that Silent Hill coming to the Nintendo Wii wasn’t enough of a sign, then Konami’s announcement that they have bought the rights for the Saw video game may just hammer home the fact that they enjoy a little bit of horror. Due this fall on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, the title’s release is set to coincide with that of Saw VI in theatres.
In an interview with Variety, David Daniels, director of marketing for Konami, outlined some key reasons why the company believes this acquisition is another step in the right direction.
“Because we have leadership in the survival horror genre, we’re passionate about it and wanted to find another property on par with Silent Hill,” explained Daniels. “Saw has grossed over $600 million worldwide and sold over 16 million DVDs, so we felt like it was a great opportunity to align ourselves with one of the most successful horror film franchises in history.”
Having initially been in the hands of Brash, the rights to Saw returned to film studio Lionsgate following Brash filing for bankruptcy. Lionsgate considered taking on the task themselves before Konami stepped in (can’t you just feel Lionsgate’s relief?). Zombie, who were originally developing the game, were then drafted back in to finish what they started.
Very little has been revealed as to the plot, but it is believed to be loosely based on the movies without following any particular one directly. Gameplay is expected to involve a character in an asylum who has to decide whether and how to solve the puzzles and save Jigsaw’s – the bad guy who sets all those revolting traps that I’m always trying and failing to explain to people who haven’t seen any of the films – victims.
“One of the big pillars of Saw is the maniacal, twisted serial killer Jigsaw’s very unusual traps and you can expect that’s something we’ll carry forward,” Daniels went on. “Some traps will even be a direct translation from the movies, particularly the iconic ones fans love.”
What do you guys think? Is this set to revitalise the survival horror genre? I hope so. But if it is to have any chance of being a classic, I’ve got two words that Konami and Zombie must abide by: Danny. Glover.

If anybody can do it, Konami can… But there is one burning question here. What would the Konami code do for this game?
I can honestly say, i have never had this much lack of anticipation for a game. Really? As if a movie that rehashes the same plot but throws in another character (that somehow has been working with jigsaw the entire time, yet has never appeared in any previous films), year after year isnt bad enough, now they are releasing a game to do it all over again!!!! I CALL SHENANIGANS!!!!!!
Dont expect this one to come to Australia
I liked the films, looking forward to see what this is like
I can’t imagine how this game will be but I really hop it’s not a disappointment. So far, the graphics don’t look too appealing. :[ SAW hasn’t had the best run in movies either, IV, in my opinion, being the worst in the series.
Hmm, oh well, I can only hope and keep up with the updates as this game develops.
