Having to pay extra for the costumes in Street Fighter IV really pisses me off. I know they're not much, but yes I would rather they not be there at all rather than being sold even though they're already on the disc. Thanks to continuing the crap with the upgrade, I decided not to buy Super Street Fighter IV at all.

Sounds like a class action suit in the works. If one PAYED for x, but x wasn't offered in its entirety, am i not still entitled to x? I mean, I did pay the full price for the game in question. Hidden "on disc" content is a scam, and it's high time it be recognized as such. I like the car seats analogy. This whole article is spot on. Preach on brotha.

This piece echoes many of my thoughts exactly. My disappointment in games like Beautiful Katamari and Ace Combat 6 for the 360 is that stages or missions that we would've seen on the original disc on the PS2 or Xbox were quite possibly held back in order to generate more revenue from ignorant consumers who are looking for more.

Capcom is the most egregious offender when it comes to ripoff DLC lately. It started with getting consumers to buy extra modes and characters for Mega Man 9, then exploded with the Street Fighter IV costume debacle, and hit fever pitch with charging players for competitive multiplayer in RE5.

As Ringosan so accurately pointed out, though, consumers have been spending the money on this DLC, so it's not gonna stop.

Fantastic article, unlocks suck. I don't mind the whole 'pay to beat the game' thing since it is totally optional, but paying for stuff that I have no way of accessing is horrific.

It's funny we live under the free market system, yet we failed to realize how it works.

I'm not supporting brainless DLC ripoffs, but we as consumers have to show them who are bosses... if we don't pay or buy, their marketing schemes will fail and they would stop coming up with these forms of DLC, the problem is we (most of us) CAN'T live without completed contents (whether you are self-proclaimed 'true' gamers or a achievement/trophy wh*re) therefor we fell right under their (developers/publishers) hands.

We are partly to blame since we proved to them their ripoff schemes did work. Personally I'd never bought anything I can live without and I believe a lot of gamers do the same... the problem are those who felt the 'need' to acquire all those contents blindly and they (devs) are not gonna stop making fool of us if we keep showing them how foolish we are.

No one would argue against episodic content like L&D or Operation Anchorage (other than value issues). Episodic content is the best use of DLC, but also the most costly for developers, and happens months down the line; gamers mostly get the winning value here.

Unlocks/pay to unlock all content keys/penny pinching like "costumes and a few cars" - we lose on that one.

Lemme flip this topic around a bit:

The Lost and the Damned.

How do people feel about that as DLC? I for one think it's perfectly acceptable, never in a million years would I expect that to be free.

Costumes and stuff like that, maybe no, but LandtheD, yes.

@Cerebrophile

"they’re simply gonna develop the content beforehand, not put it on the disc, say it wasn’t made during development, and make us download it"

Unfortunately for us, I have a feeling this is already happening. :(
