xiii1 533x400 Tales of the Bargain Bin: XIII

For every game you play, you know there are at least a dozen you have missed. Even the most hardcore gamer will let a couple slide, as the tighter you close that fist the more will slip through your fingers, and my time is generally spent eating, sleeping, bathing and writing. Although, you’d be surprised how often I skip about three of those. Recently I ventured into unknown territory; into the bargain bin.

My aim was simple, and my aim was pure; it was to capture the moments of gaming that had slipped me by. For every Kratos I have seen ascend, whose trials and tribulations have I missed? For every Squall I have seen victorious, whose misery have I neglected. For every demon I have seen fall…I guess you’ve gotten the idea by now.

You might be a storyline writer for an RPG in which a rogue mage is trying to bring about the end of the world, or maybe you are trying to think of a final boss for your secret agent FPS, what you need my friend is a doomsday device. I can help you to create an in-game device so fiendish that you might be afraid that someone will try to actually use it to bring about armageddon, by providing a list, handily combining all the best ideas from other games, and from other forms of media, into one doomsday-y cake (yes doomsday-y is a word, it’s means like doomsday) Read more… »

persona 3

The Shin Megami Tensei series is known for having mature themes and being more difficult than your average Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs). They have been largely ignored by western gamers, but it has gathered a cult following. Atlus’ Persona 3 is a more accessible game for JRPG gamers due to the inclusion of an easy mode and friendlier atmosphere. Persona 3 takes an interesting approach by combining sim-dating elements with traditional RPG elements, but how well does it mix them? Does it create a mess or a masterpiece?

You take the role of a nameless, transferred high school student. Upon arriving, the main protagonist notices an unusual change in the city and his classmates living at the dorm won’t tell him anything. After a shadow attack and awakening to his persona, his classmates finally tell him about all the shadows and the “Dark Hour” – a period of time that occurs every midnight which only a few people are aware of and remain conscious during that hour, and shadows appear. Diablo 3

Diablo 3. Love it or not, it’s coming and it’s coming in a big way. Blizzard recently released (along with episode 8 of their podcast) Of the new U.I (user interface) of Diablo 3.

Certainly no rainbows here. I just can’t wait until these are seen to be ‘’too dark’’ for the hardcore Diablo fans and Photoshop mockups hit the net. Not being a hardcore Diablo fan, what do you vets think of the new U.I? Read more… »
