excuse me, but Call of Duty, Halo or Gears of War are mainstream games designed for the masses. These are million sellers. And one could even argue about the depths of these games. There is nothing hardcore about these.

Actually, games have been fairly resilient to the recession. The end of this year saw the highest sales ever for some systems, I believe some MMOs have seen rises in subscribers and stores for entertainment goods like HMV is actually buying up more stores.
Games are seen as a "not so bad" evil, and being used as replacements.
"Can't afford to go out every night this week, will just buy a game instead"
"Sorry kids, we can't go to Disneyland, here's a Wii to make up for it."
etc.

I don't really think so, with the economy falling people are starting to waste money less and less, so casual gamers will stop wasting money on games and hardcore gamers will continue to waste their money on games as they always have; hence the extinction of casual gamers. At least for awhile.

I'm really happy with this trend to be honest. I keep getting my "God of War/Devil May Cry (whatever)s" and I get to play Peggle! Life is good.
