In a recent interview with MTV Multiplayer, PSP’s marketing head, John Koller, discussed what the Nintendo DS entry of the Grand Theft Auto series means for the PSP. Click continue for highlights from the interview.
Regarding the Nintendo’s acquisition of the GTA: Chinatown Wars game, Koller said, “No one should sleep on that franchise.”
Additionally, regarding the Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories games, Koller says, “That’s a tremendous franchise for PlayStation in general. We’ve had two that are the top two sellers on PSP right now. So, there’s definitely continued conversations with ['GTA' development studio] Rockstar on all their brands. That’s nothing that’s left the PlayStation family.”
Koller also has reservations regarding the Chinatown War’s future on Nintendo’s handheld, saying “It’s an interesting launch on DS. It raises some eyebrows in a lot of areas. It’ll be interesting to see how that sells.”
So there you have it, Sony covets the GTA series but will wait patiently for the game to return to its mother console. Perhaps if Chinatown Wars is successful, we could see some more fresh concepts for the PSP GTA series that break out beyond “San Andreas Stories.”
