As a new feature, Gamer Limit is reaching out to the community to see which games are the “best” in their respective genre. Our new “Mash Up” feature showcases one retro and one modern game fighting for the crown. For our first week, we had a “beat ‘em up mashup. Our second competition category is “shoot ‘em ups”: hit the jump for a look at both games, and instructions on how to vote!

First of all, congratulations on last week’s winner! Streets of Rage 2!

Galaga

Galaga is a household name. Created by Namco in 1981, it took the crown from Space Invaders as the most well known shooter of all-time. Heck, even Alec Baldwin claims that he got over his drug addiction by “winding down” at nights playing it! The timeless sound of the “boss Galaga” droning down and attempting to capture one of your ships is ingrained in almost everyone’s mind. Everyone and their mother has played, and loved, Galaga.

Or Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved?

No one could have anticipated the success of Geometry Wars. While it started off as a small mini-game inside of another game (Project Gotham Racing 2), Geometry Wars later “evolved” into a full-fledged 360 Arcade game. It was so successful, that it once held the title of “most downloaded Xbox Live Arcade game”. It was official: shooting games were successfully revived, and weren’t just a “niche” genre anymore. Geometry Wars had an intuitive “dual stick” system, where the left stick moved your ship, and the right stick fired in the pressed direction, allowing for an easy “pick up and play” mechanic.

  1. My vote went to Geometry Wars, based on the fact that it was so fun, it revived shooters, and introduced them to a new generation.

  2. avatar Hugh Isaacs II

Should’ve put Geometry Wars against Super Stardust HD.

  3. @Hugh

That would have been a great match up! Except that wouldn’t be fitting our poll’s theme.

  4. Galaga is easily one of the best shoot’em up ever!

  5. avatar Coleman.B

Geometry wars is great, but Galaga had its part in making Geometry wars what it is. Still, I think Geometry wars takes it just because of what it did for the shmup genre. Revived it. What was there that was a good new shmup before Geometry wars?

Cool idea for a feature, I will be checking out more of your site.

  6. Galaga was good, cept i probably wouldn’t play it anymore.
