What is Capcom anticipating more than the release of Resident Evil 5? Why, Resident Evil 6, of course! Recently Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi told 1up that the upcoming fifth game will likely be the “last of its kind.” This news floats among a sea of polarized gamers who either see the Resident Evil 5 control scheme as archaically awful, or intensely tight. So the change may be in response to the mixed criticism.
This news comes after a recent piece in Official PlayStation Magazine in which serie’s creator Shinji Mikami stated that he thinks, “Resident Evil 5 doesn’t need to change the series, but Resident Evil 6 will have to reinvent the series with another full model change or else it won’t be able to keep on going.”
Series reboots seem to be all the rage these days, so it comes as little surprise that Capcom would be considering this treatment for one of their flagship franchises. Perhaps we could see a return to Romero-esque, shambling zombies of the pre-28 days later era. We can dream.

This is sad. Most likely we will see run and gun controls in RE6, and Resident Evil will cease to be unique. Thanks Xbots, for playing Call of Duty and Gears of War so much that you can’t stand anything different, and ruining all publicity for RE5.
Confusingly enough, they JUST re-booted the series with RE4.
RE4 was a reboot… RE5 is definitely feeling a little stale though.
Dead Rising was a makeshift reboot too. Which I loved.
I honestly cannot see which way this franchise will go. Back to survival horror is NOT the way, and projecting it forward puts it at odds with Left 4 Dead, which it CAN’T compete with.
We’ll see…
I just don’t want them to screw around with the story too much. They can simplify it, fine. But don’t remove the T-Virus and S.T.A.R.S.
@Assante
Keep Wesker, keep the T-virus, but set it in a location similar to RE4. Bring back the Merchant, but have the story deal with an entirely new character, with an entirely new off-shoot company of Umbrella.
Make the game “walk and shoot” like Dead Space, make the game look really pretty like RE5, and make co-op optional. Also make the mercenaries mini-game multiplayer.
I would pay $100 for it.
I wouldn’t mind playing a stealth zombie game. That would be pretty interesting if they used different zombie fiction conventions, like using zombie spit to cover your scent and whatever.
Another idea I had was a Mirror’s Edge type game, where you have to make supply drops to various camps. and you have to stay on the walls and roof tops because ZOMBIES RUN THE STREETS.
@Assante
You might have something here. Imagine traveling the countryside, laying low, and using quiet transportation like bicycle. Basically, read the Zombie Survival Guide and you’ll get great ideas for games.
