Blockbuster recently announced they are looking to tap into the mail-order video game rental market that services like Game Fly and Gamerang have been dominating for quite some time.  Why it’s taken so long is up for personal puzzlement, but Blockbuster plans on offering “select Blockbuster Total Access online customers” a sneak preview of the service in the first half of 2009.  The company then plans to make the service fully available in the second half of the year.

The new package includes the standard movie rental service as well as games for PlayStation 2 & 3, Xbox & Xbox 360, and Wii.  Customers are also able to return games to local blockbusters for half-price video game rentals.

How Blockbuster plans on playing catch up with the already established mail-based video game rental companies is a mystery.  Existing programs like Game Fly not only offer PlayStation 1 and Game Cube libraries, but also PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS games.  Blockbuster will really have to find something unique to draw gamers in as new customers.

    Cute title.
But I prefer to buy then rent.

  2. I think it’s a “too little too late” effort on the part of blockbuster.
