The above picture leaves me speechless. It’s classic Mario, redone with HD “graphics”. The artist is Orioto on deviantART.

Hit the jump for some more breathtaking samples.

The following images are not in-game screenshots; they are pictures. Most of these, especially the Super Metroid picture, bring back memories. What’s the next step for Nintendo, and other developers when they’re done bringing their classic games to handhelds and digital console stores?

When the market for these retro remakes saturates, why not make HD versions? If an HD remake of Super Mario World came out, I’m sure it would sell even more Nintendo consoles (given that their next console is HD). Nintendo has no need to do this for many years, but the prospect is wondrous. I now have a strange urge to go play Link to the Past…..

  1. Wow, incredible artwork. I’m digging the Legend of Zelda piece.

  2. avatar Rifted

Awesome. Can you imagine a new sonic game in that vein instead of the crud they keep releasing.

  3. @Rifted

I could only hope they someday do this. After Unleashed, Sonic Team needs to wake up and see the potential they have here. Make Sonic 4 just like Capcom made Mega Man 9. BAM – everyone loves Sonic again.

  4. avatar fsgs

    ART? What art?

  5. I hope these images inspire some developers (namely Sonic Team) into make/remaking some classic games.

:As these different iuecnfnles came collectively, a distinctly Cuban taste and model developed, which is reminiscent of nation peasant kinds of cooking by oral custom and eye, rather than relying on distinct measurements and the development of dishes that tend towards the uncomplicated and hearty, and that can be left on their unique to simmer. Fussy, major sauces are abnormal and deep-frying is just not a favored cooking system. The island nation, by natural means, uses a wonderful deal of seafood in its cuisine, which encourages the use of effortless cooking strategies and spicing that is meant to boost, not smother, all-natural flavors.

  6. avatar Xbot

    Enough nostalgia crap..

    get with the times.

    Killzone 2…

  7. avatar whyme

if only they would make classic games like these now. I would buy a wii in a heart beat especially if konami made contra like these games.

  8. avatar whyme

and to the guy above me : everyone is not gun ho on HARDCORE games
some people wish old classic games to be re-made hell!! I am tired of hard core this hard core that WTF wheres all the fun classic games????

  9. That Mario screens are breathtaking. That is the sort of graphics Nintendo needs to implement, and if they did just that with classic N64 and Gamecube titles, I would buy them all.

:There are actually alblsuteoy quite a lot of details just like that to take into consideration. Thatb4s a amazing point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly you can find questions like the one you bring up where the most fundamental factor will certainly be working in honest fine faith. I donb4t know if finest practices have emerged around things just like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game.

    IMPRESSIVE!

    Freaking hell!

  11. avatar kukurukuku

    good direction, bad execution..
as for the sonic team, i’m pretty sure they’ve thought of (something like) that.. nintendo too.. the “problem” is, in my humble opinion (for i am yet another gamer, not a developer, industrial designer by trade), is it wouldn’t pay off.. developing a title based on any of these ips in (really) good 2d costs much more than your current gen mario/ zelda/ sonic/ meteoroid.. it’s not just the games.. compare studio ghibil and pixar if you will.. we did not migrate to 3d because it is more progressive or looks better, it’s simply- cheaper..

  12. @kukurukuku

I see what you mean, but it’s been done on Xbox Live Arcade to a certain extent, and most recently with R-Type dimensions. You can switch between the retro and modern view with the “Y” button. I think remaking games with the option for retro or modern is something developers should be doing more often.

  13. avatar ugh

i hate when artists use too much white !! PUT COLOR INTO IT

  14. avatar AdventGlacian

its the sky and etc asshat ^ugh^
if there was supposed to be color there would be.

  15. avatar microwaveb

These look shopped. I can tell from the pixels and from having seen a few shops in my time.

  16. avatar L3G10N

White IS a color you idiots. Maybe you should learn the basic concepts of art before you spout off ignorant statements.

  17. avatar CthulhusMinion

First off(starting at the bottom)): Technically White is NOT a color, it is a shade. Obviously, yes, they were made by someone besides an actual game designer(i.e. what you like to call photoshopped) specifically for a game that may or may not be on it’s way to being made.

Being a student in an art college, gaining my carreer in the gaming field(Game Art and Design) I get to learn a lot about cost efficiency and what’s worth it and what’s not.
Nowadays it seems even if the quality is not as good as we’d like it to be, speed IS cost efficient and that is what gains money. Unless of course people throw in utter crap and try to pass it off.

Making games with this good of graphic would take far too long, and too much time of the companies workers. Maybe when they bring out some new programs that will allow us to do such a thing FASTER and have it be more available to us it would happen.

As for now this seems to be just a thought.

    It would be lovely tho!

I don’t think I’d want to be the one put on the job for that project…

  18. avatar tyler

how do you put an hd remake on a non hd system? better luck next gen.

  19. avatar Name (Required)

It’s a nice idea, and the screens are well done.

I grew up in 2600 days…and when I go back to the classics, graphics aren’t the main things that bug me. Honestly, I’d rather have 8-bit graphics with smoother movement and more fluid controls than just a prettier version of the same primitively-playing game.

And you know that whenever they start remaking classics, they can’t help messing with things too much. Even with direct ports, they seem to lose a little something in translation (someone mentioned Xbox Live Arcade…)

  20. @Guy above me
I think R-Type on XBLA did a great job in keeping the magic of the original. With the ability to switch from retro to HD seamlessly, it’s easy to see what this holds in the future for retro-remakes.

If Nintendo released a game that looked like a better version of the DS’ “New Super Mario Brothers” for WiiWare, and it was a remake of the original Super Mario Brothers 1 for the NES, the community would go crazy.

  21. avatar Name (Required)

That megaman pic deserves some recognition.

Because it is freakin’ awesome. Wow.

  22. avatar triforceful

Can we get these in a higher resolution?!

  23. avatar drinkactsuccess.com

Holy SHIT!! I want to buy the Sonic one SO BAD!

  24. avatar NeoRyo

Wow…it’s funny, because it still sticks to the heart and soul of the games, but this look is so fresh. I would not mind playing these games all over again just with this view.

Maybe that’s another reason the new Street Fighters are so successful, considering they are mixing up their looks.

  25. avatar hercules_fitch

It shouldn’t take that much to remake the games with better graphics… considering that they already have the concept there… I mean, the New Super Mario Bros for the DS was a step in the right direction, although that was an entirely new game, not simply a remake. I still love it though. Just bring back the old games, I don’t like emulators!

  26. avatar n

Holy shit — the things they could do with 2D! 3D would look like ass beside the best 2D animation!

  27. avatar Brendan

This brings a tear to my eye, these are the greatest things ive seen in my life, NES ftw!

  28. avatar Will

Oh my sweet jesus, I wish so much that someone would actually redo these games in this style. It’s weird because I was just reading about Street Fighter IV in the new Game Informer, and the guy was talking about how he wished developers would do what they did with Street Fighter IV to other classic games from the 2D era. This is precisely what would happen, and oh my god I would worship the developers who did it.

  29. avatar Xbot

Graphics dont mean alot when the gameplay is broken just like in all those games except Sonic.

    • avatar Fabien

i really like that megaman one

    • avatar Masum

:This is getting a bit more suceibtjve, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of neighbors will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune Social is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

  31. avatar Andro

First off, i would like to say that i TOTALLY LOVE the megaman one. unfortunately, judging by his height in the air and how far he is over the gap, he’s not gonna make that jump… but god, that mega-buster of his looks incredible. Now, L3G10N, who the shit cares if these things are photoshopped? I would love to see what you could do with a good photoshop. Let’s see if you could even come close to measuring up to these works of art. Actually, a lot of you are right about the sonic thing because seriously, Sonic Team has gone downhill since Sonic Adventure 2: Battle (which, FYI, was like the best thing ever). If they were to release a game like this with awesome HD graphics and like, 10 times the levels… Well, let’s just say that Sega could be on top once more.

  32. avatar Andro

    Oh sorry L3G10N, i meant microwaveb….

  33. avatar Deezy

I like these, but his portraits all seem to be photomanipulations (which are not marked as such and are therefore a clear violation of deviantART policy. Much as I enjoy his original work, I find little to like about an “artist” who refuses to credit those he takes from.

  34. avatar COOLLIKE

Oh my goodness, the Zelda one is freaking awesome.

  35. avatar snatch

I would play all of these if they remade them. “A link to the past” = best game ever.

  36. avatar RagnorakTres

I definitely appreciate the idea. My only concern would be cost effectiveness and time, but I think that these games would SELL. Even if they were priced like they used to be, the companies would make some serious megabucks.

  37. avatar Selig

awesome, now just make them into games

Graphics have been in “high definition” since you could hook a playstation 2 or xbox up to a PC monitor at 1024×768 – ie about 8 years ago. The “HD revolution” for games happened a long time ago.

  39. avatar No

That’s some nasty looking stuff man!

  40. avatar AngelicDirt

The Sonic 2 one makes me cry… They all do, actually… …:”)…

(Now if only SEGA weren’t being douches about it’s own mascot.)

  41. avatar Xbot

“A link to the past” = best game ever.

I agree after that all zelda games have been complete trash!

  42. avatar InsaneMooCow

for all who are complaining about photo editing, i hope you realize many artists draw with physical means (paint, pens, etc) then go back and refine it with photoshop. it’s perfectly ok, and just because you hear the word photoshop doesnt mean they stole it from someone else.
now then, i liked pretty much all of them, although the legend of zelda one stood out to me because i LOVED that series. however, that one and the megaman one seem a little too dark and gloomy. there’s just too much gray in the megaman one, and even if thats how it was meant to be, i think there should be something that pops out.

  43. avatar KemiKemist

100% love the idea of doing 2D some justice. Only one comment irked me since I am both an artist and a scientist. White is all of the color spectrum reflected back. Black is something that has absorbed all color spectrum. And as for white being a “shade”… really? Shade implies shadow which has nothing to do with 2D and everything to do with 3D. And real artist generally refer to different gradations of the same color it’s “value”. Shading is something 6th grade art teachers make you do.

    Just my 0.02$

  44. avatar Squinty

Too bad they’re so freaking small. They look cool anyway though.

  45. avatar Rofl

    @Kemist

I like it how people engage in pointless arguments about defining white.
As for your ‘being both a scientist and an artist and therefore must tell you that white is all the colors’, I would like to inform you that nobody cares whether or not white is really a color.

But remember: We have color TV and B&W TV. There’s a reason why B&W TV isn’t considered color TV.

I personally liked the mario pictures. Though involving 3D into the gameplay and not only the graphics (as seen in intro picture) would ruin the game, in my opinion.

  46. avatar Pointless

The point of arguing about defining white is to find an undisputed defined.

Color can refer to light wavelength reflected from an objects surface. In this case, you can say that white and black are not ‘colors’ because they are not independently associated with a wavelength, ROYGBV. But, in this case, if you say that white is not a color but red is, then is pink only half a color?

Another way people use the term ‘color’ is merely as a reference to the quality of light reflected, but in terms of a unique combination of hue, saturation, and brightness, or by some other color formula (RBG, CMYK). Here, a color is simply defined by the uniqueness of the appearance of the combination. White is a color defined as full brightness or full R, G, and B, and so on. Seeing as how this is the common, colloquially usage of the word, when someone asks you to hand them a white crayon, you can either hand then the white crayon if you like to do the obvious, or you can say “white isn’t a color” if you are an asshat.

  47. avatar AP

To kukurukuku, who said that making 3D games are cheaper than 2D games…are you for real? I don’t think you know anything about making games.

  48. avatar amanda
