The newest firmware update for the Playstation 3 looks to add a few great options for digital media viewing. Read on for more details

  • DivX 3.11 support
  • Guest login to the Playstation Store
  • Ability to sort photos by categories like “smiles” and “age”

The cell processor is really looking to get a workout, and this update shows us what the Playstation 3 is capable of as a media viewer. The new photo application looks similar to Home’s interface. Regarding specifics for the new photo capabilities, Sony’s blog states “the key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured.”

The update is now available; choose the system update option on your XMB

Excellent report there Chris. Just looking specifically at the content of the update though, it just seems like a fancy photo editor? I personally have never though, “Let’s organise my pictures into the number of faces in each picture” or better still, “Let’s put all the pictures in order of facial expressions!”. I think Sony should look at improving HOME and making that more worthwhile than spending time with something as trivial as a photo-player because seriously, who takes pictures with a camera and runs to the PS3 to show them on a screen?
