Hideo Kojima has posted his top 15 movies that influenced Metal Gear Solid. Movies like Goldfinger are obvious, with Metal Gear Solid 3 having strong Bond overtones, but a lot of them are just overall classic action movies. The trials and tribulations of war in Metal Gear could have easily drawn it’s influences from Full Metal Jacket. Technology evolving to an out of control rate is shown in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The “One Man” against it all theme can be seen in Die Hard, and perhaps Solid Snake’s radio relationship with Otacon can be compared to John Mclane and Sgt. Al Powell. The optic camo found from the first game on can be drawn from Predator. Also, David and Hal, Solid Snake and Otacon’s real names, are from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
There is one movie that every Metal Gear fanboy is wondering why it didn’t make the cut:Escape from New York! Snake, the main character of the Metal Gear Solid series, is based off of Kurt Russel’s character “Snake Plissken”. Kojima even uses the name Plissken as an alias for Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 2! Regardless of what people think he may have left out, Mr. Kojima has a very good taste in movies.
