Hideo Kojima has posted his top 15 movies that influenced Metal Gear Solid. Movies like Goldfinger are obvious, with Metal Gear Solid 3 having strong Bond overtones, but a lot of them are just overall classic action movies. Hit the jump for a quick look at a few of his choices, and a bigger view of his selection.

The trials and tribulations of war in Metal Gear could have easily drawn it’s influences from Full Metal Jacket. Technology evolving to an out of control rate is shown in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The “One Man” against it all theme can be seen in Die Hard, and perhaps Solid Snake’s radio relationship with Otacon can be compared to John Mclane and Sgt. Al Powell. The optic camo found from the first game on can be drawn from Predator. Also, David and Hal, Solid Snake and Otacon’s real names, are from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

There is one movie that every Metal Gear fanboy is wondering why it didn’t make the cut:Escape from New York! Snake, the main character of the Metal Gear Solid series, is based off of Kurt Russel’s character “Snake Plissken”. Kojima even uses the name Plissken as an alias for Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 2! Regardless of what people think he may have left out, Mr. Kojima has a very good taste in movies. Black Hawk down inspired the opening to MGS4. Snake being the “last hope” could be interpreted from Children of Men. Raiden’s identity crisis and an organization using this against him is from Bourne. The Patriots are the Apes, and taking over the earth. Some of these you have to dig deep.

  3. Same here Gerry, I mean there are a few but not all to me show relation.

Well, I guess, rather than basing a game entirely off a film – rather, take elements of the film and turn them into aspects of gameplay. I think MGS is better for it and no so cliche’d or predicable like other games based solely of a film storyline.
