Yes, it’s true, gaming magazine EGM will no longer be arriving to your mailbox. If you have recieved your January 2009 issue, consider it your last. Today the owners of EGM, Ziff Davis Media, has sold the rights to the magazine and its affliated websites. So from now on 1Up.com, MyCheats.com, GameVideos.com, and GameTab.com will be owned and operated by UGO Entertainment.

UGO Entertainment is a unit of the Heart Corporation (Hearst.com). Based of UGO Entertainments main website (UGO.com) Ziff Davis has put their websites in good hands. UGO.com attracts 40 million viewers each month, ans that number is sure to go up with the new acquisition. Congratulations on the pick up UGO Entertainment, and sorry to see EGM go.

The official press release can be found here.

  1. I was reading some stuff and heard that one of the guys had his father pass away last month, and this month he gets sacked from his job.

It just goes to show how money has no conscience.

yea it does suck sadly i don’t know any other good gaming mag maybe UGO will be smart and re brand the name bring it back.

  3. This is a terrible way to start off 09. I loved 1up’s podcasts and the 1up show. A lot of good people lost their job and 1up lost a lot of talent. GFW’s former editor in chief posted a blog here: http://jeff-greenspeak.blogspot.com/2009/01/no-youre-not-same-1up.html everyone should read it he states what were all thinking very well.

I’ve bought EGM religoulsly since 1991 and it’s hard to believe it’s gone. Before the Internet, EGM was THE resource for all gaming news. It was my connection to the industry and it’s how I learned how the industry worked. Before E3 the gaming companies focused all their efforts as far as booths and new game announcements for the January CES. The February issue of EGM was like Christmas time as it was the first glimpse many of us got of all the new games and announcements. The thing that will always be better about a gaming magazine as opposed to a website is that I have to look at ALL the pages and see ALL the ads and reviews in a mag, wheras I only click on the links that interest me on a gaming site. Unfortunitly print media is going the way of the DoDo and this will become a more common occurance with other publications as well.

    Long Live EGM.
