Nintendo recently announced that they reduced their sales’ estimates for 2009, attributing this mostly to the strength of Yen and the overall economic troubles.  This bit of news has some industry analysts concerned.

Analyst Hiroshi Kamide was quoted observing that Nintendo’s reduced profit estimate “suggests that the roaring pace of Wii growth that we’ve seen until now may be over.” He also goes on to predict that the company will see a “collapse” in the fourth quarter of this year.

Wedbush Morgan analyst MIchael Pachter insists that Nintendo will stay “solid,” and that they are struggling the most in Japan itself.  Additionally, Pacther shares that “year-over-year” movement of the Wii is down by 1 million units in the last 9 months.

The report on Gamasutra recently updated that a Reuters report shows that Nintendo’s shares are down by 12%.

Is anybody worried that the masses are becoming disenchanted with the Wii and that Nintendo could see trouble in the future?  What does this outlook of lower sales mean for Sony and Microsoft?

Hopefully Sony will get their heads on straight and see this as an opportunity to cut the cost of the PS3. It could really help them with their install base.

  2. Exactly Chris, as proven the system has been doing a lot better with every price cut and once it eventually reaches $250 to $200 they will fly of the shelves.

I agree guys. Maybe they’ll realize they don’t need 532 gb hard drives in each console, too.

  4. Well with the way it is selling it’s no wonder. It has to reach a saturation point soon.

Perhaps Wii was a success story but I did not see it lasting forever – I mean, casual gamers aren’t going to fork out 100 dollars a year for casual games. If Nintendo could do like Microsoft, while hitting the hardcore market and then focusing on the casual market without selling themselves for sub-par independant games, they could get the best of both worlds. The thing is, in order to get the hardcore market, they have to step up the technology with their consoles before developers like Infinity Ward and Rockstar port their games (and a decent quality) for Nintendo consoles.

wii can’t constantly be selling tons of systems, what happens when everyone has one? you have to start making great games to support the system, people aren’t going to play wii sports forever… i mean eventually they will get tennis elbow.
