If you’ve never heard of Penny Arcade, you should check them out online and see if their particular brand of humor is your cup of tea: their razor wit expletive filled dialogue is a core part of both the web comic, and the game’s sense of humor.

“On the Rain Slick” is played like a traditional, watered down version of Final Fantasy. Read on to find out how it stands up against the legacy of the classic comic strip. Read more… »

L.B. Jeffries at Banana Pepper Martinis recently posted this about video game “Journalism” versus Critique. It’s a very interesting read for anyone up on video games and is an important question to ponder for writers like me, and for readers like you. In addition to the recent symposium started by former 1UP Editor Shawn Elliot, the very nature of video game “journalism” is being scrutinized. There’s a lot of stirring as come to realize that most video game “journalism” is more along the lines of enthusiast press, and that there are actually very few journlists in the industry. As L.B. Jeffries asserts in his article, journalists aren’t supposed to analyze, they simply present the facts. This isn’t the nature of the industry, and it’s far from the standard. Analysis is the name of the game.

Why All Gamers Should Love D. Jaffe
By: | December 13th, 2008

david

So by now every one who has any interest or knowledge of the gaming industry knows a few of the big names around. There’s Miyamoto, Kojima, Cliffy B., Phil Harrison, Shane Kim and so on and so on. I could go on for a while on all the big names in the industry but that’s not why I’m writing this. Why I’m writing this is because of what I’ve seen from one specific person in the gaming industry. While you big talkers like Cliffy B and Shane, there is one person in the industry who is still down to Earth.

By: | December 13th, 2008

dlc

Today Rockstar Games, the publisher responsible for such games as GTA IV and Midnight Club: Los Angeles announced that DLC will be coming your way for Midnight Club: Los Angeles, which includes a  South Central map upgrade.  The DLC will come with some new areas for you to explore.  Some of the famous landmarks that will be included on the map are Exposition Park, the USC campus and Shrine Auditorium. This area will be a free download.

There was also an announcement of the South Central Content Pack.  This pack will deliver new character competitions, races and even some new music tracks to the game.  There is no date or price for the pack, but it’s sure good to know that they have something fresh for us all.

I have a great privilege to be a part of the xbox.com forums, I see many community managers from different development houses interact with people on the forums, take some feedback and just relax and have fun with fans of their game.  After Robert Bowling [Community Manager of Infinity Ward] made an announcement that a set of playlists were going to come via an update for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, many of us anticipated the new playlists and waited for weeks onto months before coming to the realization that the playlists were never going to happen.  When one of the posters asked as to why there aren’t any DLC for CoD4, Rober replied:

Rez HD review
By: | December 11th, 2008

This has to be the hardest review I’ve ever written. To describe Rez in a way that is clear to comprehend and explain its sheer awesomeness without repetitively using the word awesome. To put it quite simply, Rez is not just a game, Rez is an experience. Don’t let the “trippy” vector graphics that throb to the beat of the music, or the simplistic game play turn you off on this unique gem that rises to the top of the sea of clones and mediocrity that is today’s gaming market. It’s not often that a game as unique as Rez comes around; yes I know that it originally came out on the Dreamcast and PS2, but that’s not the point. Rez originally came out in 2001; now in 2008 it is re-released and still feels new, original, and fun. It holds up after seven years, which is quite amazing.
